Onside Kick In The First Quarter?

Texas Tech won against Baylor despite trying an onside kick, in the first quarter...
(Guessing the kicker will be getting some extra practice this week) :icon_lol:

There is more to it.

If I recall right the kicking team can't touch the ball without a penalty till it goes 10 yards unless the receiving team touches it first. The receiving team can either down it or pick it up and run which they did. The kicking team should have been ready for that and tackled him or probably better yet downed the ball themselves accepted the penalty and kicked it again. So not only does the kicker need practice for failing to move the ball 10 yards the whole kicking team needs a refresher in the rules and what to do under different scenarios. The idea that may have prevailed here is that the receiving team might pick the ball up and fumble it in doing so - obviously a bad bet!

You're right on all counts, Ed.
I find myself watching more and more College ball.
Way more interesting, for me, than Pro ball anymore.

There's way more to it than just for that play. I find that players, even in the pro teams, at times seem not to have a grasp of the basic fundamentals of the game. Thus, players who try to do things which might normally be okay but are not okay in the last couple mins of a game. Staying in bounds when the proper thing is to get OUT and save the clock. Or alternatively, going out of bounds when you're ahead but is maybe 4th down and the proper thing would be to get down on the ground and let the clock run. You see things, too numerous to think of, all the time. It's like they don't know the rules even though most players have played for 12 to 16 yrs.
