OT And I thought flightsim was getting expensive

I used to be huge into AFV modelling, and like you i sat down the airbrush and the exacto knife years ago, what really broke my heart is when my mother sold all of my pieces at a garage sale. That HET would look great next to Tamiyas dragon wagon. I have been trying to resist the urge to get back into modelling but eventually ill crack

*EDIT* This would look better next to the dragon wagon http://www.accurate-armour.com/Show...rer=0&category=14&subcategory=20&product=1109

I used to work by a national guard base that had a parking lot full of these puppies, as well as other heavy vehicles

That's a Tyne, which was what I originally wanted to learn how to use Gmax to model for some missions, but the RNLI never got back to me when I sent them more information as per their request.

I've always liked the Tyne Class - at least partially because it's the only lifeboat I've ever got truly up close to and had a good look around, when we went to visit the chief engineer of the Tenby Lifeboat. The Severn (it is a Severn, not a Trent, that I have the Airfix model of to build ) is an afloat boat, not a slipway one like the Tyne:

Severn: http://www.rnli.org.uk/what_we_do/lifeboats/current_lifeboats/lifeboat_detail?articleid=44198

Tyne: http://www.rnli.org.uk/what_we_do/lifeboats/current_lifeboats/lifeboat_detail?articleid=44204

While I'd love to say yes to the photos and get cracking on badly modelling a Tyne, it's way off the bottom of the list now unfortunately. The RNLI are (have to be in the modern world) very protective of their identity and image, so I can't release anything including one of their boats, or using their paint, etc. without their permission. To quote the legal guy I ended up talking to, "We don't normally allow our imagery to be used in games".

Pity, but still. If I ever do get around to modelling a rescue boat, it'll be a white and red, or green and gold, generic one.

Edit: Skippy: Scrap, sale, or major overhaul. I'd suggest sale, because a lot of the Tynes have gone overseas after being replaced by newer, much faster, slipway boats. Note that there's no station name above the "Lifeboat" on the stern, so that was a reserve boat anyway, and the fact that all markings have been removed, along with the generally unhealthy looking state of it, show that it has been removed from the fleet. Our local shopping centre had an old retired Oakley on display in the car park for years, but the local yobs decided it would be fun to destroy it. Needless to say, it's not there any more.

Ian,

Thats interesting regarding RNLI copyright, I've come across the same in train sim but in fight sim its almost open house, I'll zip up all the images I have and post a link shortly, collect if you will, use as you feel fit. Attached is another that passed through, not sure what class this is.

All of these are for export, I was informed that they were for Hong Kong or china, I didnt get the station of the one above but did see the Mumbles and Lough Swilly pass through here.

I'll post some more loads that have passed through here shortly, they're quite varied and very interesting, well to me they are LOL.

Yup, definately a Tiger II ( King Tiger ), you can tell by the sloped rear bulkhead and the nine running axels, Panther has eight, I may well look into this, didnt know it was a Tiger II, though a Tiger I would be cool too.

I used to work in 1/35th and remember well hand applying Zimmermit and indenting each ridge with a screwdriver, trying to make it even but not too even as to make it look false and all before the putty set LOL.

Ahh, thats the US version with the angled bonnet, though I think later versions now come with the rounded bonnet as seen on the UK versions.

That last one is an Arun, Michael - the shorter of the two Aruns I think from the windows, but may be wrong on that. The Arun is the boat that is being phased out as they are replaced by Severns and Trents.

The Aussies and New Zealand have obtained a lot of ex-RNLI boats. Considering that the RNLI based their older designs on USCG drawings, most of the world now comes to the RNLI for design expertise or just plain to buy their old/new designs!

Michael,

The price of plastic models has skyrocketed lately. All the major kit producers have raised their prices by 20-30%.

I build plastic aircraft and AFV's and some kit prices are insane now, with no end in sight. I have a Trumpeter 1/32 F-8E on pre-order and it'll be over $100. I just picked up a 32nd Bf-110C for $90. They are gorgeous kits to be sure. I guess I'll pay that much for something tangible that I can tough, hold, fondle, etc. but for a virtual aircraft I will think twice before even spending $20.

Well since Airfix went bust, the bottom end of the model kit market has vanished, leaving only one or two companies producing the smaller models (Revell, mainly) and thus shrinking the market further, as fewer people are getting in at the bottom end of the market to move up it to the larger, more expensive, models.

That said, a limited range of Airfix stuff is trickling through again (about half the old catalogue is now available, but with a lot fewer stockists) so we might see a resurgence of the cheaper beginners end, unless the quality goes down again and everyone ignores them.

As far as prices go I havent noticed an increase, i stepped away from models about 2003 or so, and a couple months ago i went to the hobby store and at least the dragon tanks were about the same prices i remember, in the neighborhood of $50. It is very disheartening to be in the store and see these models that cost 50, then take tons of time to build and paint, and right next to them are the already built, painted, and weathered models for $30 :banghead:

The massive rise in the price of crude oil won't have helped either, although I've heard the oil companies actually make a profit out of plastics rather than just about breaking even as they do with fuel.
