OT - dang, pilot pours self a tea during barrel roll!|

Bob Hoover is a legend among aviators, I saw his many years ago and it amazed me and still does, he claims that he is not anything special, I beg to differ!

I saw him do that engines off routine with that Shrike Commander at the Reno Air Races years ago. Good stuff.

I think one of the things that helped him do it was that he had full stall training. something a lot of pilots dont get any more.. i could be wrong though

Well, you *could* be wrong -- along with me -- but I too strongly suspect that Bob's well versed in all of the fundamentals, and deep-stall / full-stall training probably figured-in there quite significantly!

He was from a different era. Things weren't push button like they are today. His test pilot days required a steady hand and a great knowledge of energy management. He is easily one of the greats.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Mr. Hoover at the EAA fly-in at Rockford, Il. many years ago before it moved to Oshkosh, and the aero commander had grass stains under the wingtips after his one wheel landing routine. An incredibly skilled pilot and an true old fashioned gentleman.

Back in the 1990's the FAA revoked Bob Hoover's license and medical certificates on the grounds that he was mentally unstable, because he would shut the engines down and do these energy mgmt manuevers. He tried for a long time to get them reinstated, but to no avail. He may have them back at this point, I'm not sure.

If I remember correctly, in the 1990's a Shrike (?) Commander that was in Melbourne (Australia) was found to be his specially adapted one. I think it had un-feathering props and some other mods.
He came out to Australia and I saw him do his routine at an airshow at Archerfield Airport in Brisbane in 1995. This was after The FAA revoked his licence, but the Australian Civil Aviation Authority gave him permission to do his routine.

Airplanes work the same as they did 34807345897345 aeons ago. This has nothing to do with increased use of electronics. Nothing at all!
You could as well put Bob in a Diamond Twin Star and after enough practice he'd pull off the same stunts as he did with the Twin Commander.

- Edit:
I like what Bob did. He had a great knowledge of his aircraft, made the right calls at the right time and was willing to take risks. Hats off!

Riiiiiigggggght.. Three years and F. Lee Baileys expenses and they JUST did it out of the kindness of their hearts..
God's that director was slimey..

Yeap, I was a member of the EAA at the time and I remember the anger this affair generated. The whole thing stunk to high heaven. Reading that interview just brought all my memories & feelings of that time back to the surface. Bob Hoover was not only one of the best(maybe the best) in the business, he is a gentleman and a professional at the highest tier. Is always a great joy to watch him fly.
