OT: I thought popcorn was supposed to be good for you?

I rarely go to the movies and when I do, I go for a small popcorn (no butter) and a small diet soda. I'm a type 2 diabetic and if I watch what I eat, it's rarely a problem for me.

Mrs Willy likes to go to places with buffets when we eat out, but I'm always feeling like I'm not getting my money's worth out of them as about one pass and I'm done. And I don't pile my plate up either.

You are correct. I was commenting that young children are getting Type 2 these days. That's scary.

And the problem is even with exercise, we're not burning off the extra we need to lose thanks to the larger portions.

We've pretty much gone back to the "old days", when eating out was the rare treat. Make your own, and have leftovers. Amazing how many calories and $$$ you can save. Also amazing how we seemed to forget that over the years. :kilroy:

Yup...after reading through the thread again, I kinda figured that was the gist of your post Dain.

It IS scary how many kids are winding up Type 2 these days! That's something that should rear it's head after MANY years...not before you're out of junior high.
The sad part is...how many little kids do you see running around all wound up on caffeine and sugar because the folks' let em eat/drink whatever they want. these are future cases waiting to happen.
Even sadder, I know a young couple here that had a TWO-year old already hooked on Mountain Dew...the poor kid's sippy cup was always full of that stuff instead of milk, juice, water, or anything healthy. This kid is 5 now and is already pretty round even though his parents are both "average" build. The poor kid is already doomed to fail because of bad parenting!

Yup on the lack of excercise too. As you , BradKaste, and others pointed out. Kids just don't get out and move around anymore like many of us did when we were kids. (shhh...I'm not at the half century mark yet Brad! :d)

I'll take a plate full of garden-fresh veggies and whatever wild game I've got in the freezer over eating out anyday.
BUT...lack of time does herd me to the drive-thru or a certain few steak houses more often than I'd like to.

No kidding!

I miss being able to do the occasional pig-out...I gotta limit myself pretty close on that stuff too.
Sure, I could drop a little more insulin and indulge...but that just means more calories just headed for my waist.
I'll sometimes do a "two-plate run", but with lotsa of veggies instead of all those good pasta salads.

This'll probably make everyone feel good but ........ I understand that they feed pigs corn for about 3 months before they make bacon of them. :running:

And beef cattle are finish fed on corn too. BUT...in the feedlot the critters are fed "buffet-style" too. A much larger portion than what they need to survive. It's good stuff, so they'll snarf it all down and patiently wait for the next mealtime.
Very much like if/when we overdose on food at every meal...the excess food gets stored away and we (or the feeder animals) get nice and plump! :d

Corn is a high-energy food, just like any other grain seed. The starches stored inside that would normally be fuel for the baby plant to start growing inside but when we eat em, we get it instead.

Yep, grain is real high energy food. You have to be careful feeding it to horses or they'll get enough to founder from laminitis. And if it's bad enough, you'll have to put 'em down.
