OT: Technology makes some of us stupid ...

God occasionally pours chlorine in the gene pool to kill off the stupid people. Following a GPS until your car teeters on the edge of a cliff is an example of this divine process in action. This guy got lucky, maybe he'll get picked up next time the "pool" gets cleaned. :d

As a car nut I still use maps (in future there will be generations of fools who won´t be able to find their own bum without a GPS). This trains my sense for orientation.

But it goes into many details, I can´t stand ESP either on cars. I wan´t to brake myself if I have to. The story behind EPS:

When the Mercedes A was first tested it did not pass the "Moose test". It swiveled and fell on it´s side when cornering tight in changing directions. This was due to a poor wheelbase construction. But instead of expensively contructing a better whellbase Mercedes invented the ESP. This device automatically brakes for you when you go into tight corners "too fast". No joke! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose_test

Good night age of thinking!:help:

saw that earlier today, i still cant understand people who trust technoglagy wholy. Like Alex i still use a map, hell of a lot better, easier, and less hassel, it also doesnt bitch at you if you miss the turn!

I couldn´t stand that neutral uncaring voice all the time, with my temper I´d smash the GPS device to pieces after the first wrong turn:karate:

Moreover I still see more and more people neglecting the traffic around them and driving like on drugs because they fully concentrate on that voice telling them what to do instead of watching the traffic! It literally DRIVES me mad!

There have been three people who have tried to find our house using their GPS/Tom Tom whatevers....and all three were taken a quarter mile up the road, to a house on the other side of the road. Never mind that I gave them detailed directions on how to find us, they still relied on their little idiot boxes and got lost.

I don't trust the GPS machines either and never will....fun toy and thats all. Maps rock and are fun to use...I just hate folding them back up.

it's like the linked braking systems that are showing up on the touring bikes these days. applying the front or rear brake gives you a percentage of the other brake automatically. i feel the same as you. i'll modulate my own braking, thank you. anti-lock? ok, i'll go there. but that's my limit. and then id rather have the option of turning it off from an easily accessable location and without tools. same also with the standard transmision in cars these days. it's going the way of the dodo bird. i like rowing my own, but unless you buy a sportscar (and even many of them don't have true manual shift) or the smallest wheezer engine available, you can't get one anymore.
