OT - Tempelhof has closed it's doors at midnight

arrghh.....

One of the largest building structures made by mankind. A moon cresent shape that spanned miles....

Sad that its gone now. I cant believe they let roots like that die.

Really sad to see such a historic field closed, happening much to frequently here too. :banghead:

As a kid and still I love to visit airfields..If they keep this up there will be none to visit soon but those big city ones where you can't even see the field....

Its always disheartning to watch this happen....:banghead:

It is very sad. I ve been there in May and I must say that it was incredible object. Hopefully, the Authorities will preserve some part of the objects...

Nach Tempelhof

When I think about my city, Berlin , I think " Freistaat Preußen " .Where is Berlin , otherwise dead since January 30th 1933 .... Berlin was a beautiful city and now ,
that there remains in Berlin ?

This poem is like Berlin, deadly as the world .

Heidenröslein

Sah ein Knab' ein Röslein stehn,
Röslein auf der Heiden,
War so jung und morgenschön,
Lief er schnell es nah zu sehn,
Sah's mit vielen Freuden.
Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,
Röslein auf der Heiden.
Knabe sprach: "Ich breche dich,
Röslein auf der Heiden."
Röslein sprach: "Ich steche dich,
Daß du ewig denkst an mich,
Und ich will's nicht leiden."
Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,
Röslein auf der Heiden.
Und der wilde Knabe brach
's Röslein auf der Heiden;
Röslein wehrte sich und stach,
Half ihm doch kein Weh und Ach,
Mußt' es eben leiden.
Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,
Röslein auf der Heiden.

Best Regards Anna, very sad ....

At least i have Bill's version to help me remember , The three lower levels are still flooded to this day, having never been opened up due to un-exploded ordinance.
Colonel Boettger, refused to carry out orders to blow up the base, choosing instead to kill himself. After he died the Russian troops attempted to clear the five lower levels of the airbase but the Germans had booby trapped everything and too many were killed, leading the Russian commander to order the lower levels be flooded with water.
The airport is the hub of a "hub and spoke" arrangement of underground tunnels, and parts for the airplanes were brought from all parts of the city to the air base to be assembled and then flown out, Stuka" dive bombers and later Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter planes were assembled in Tempelhof's underground tunnels, aircraft engines were trucked to Tempelhof and joined to finished airframes.

The building and grounds were a living piece of history and now afford the chance to preserve for posterity what may become one of the finest places for an aviation museum there is on the planet , imagine what there might be on site already in the unexplored tunnels .

tis a very sad day indeed :frown: hopefully it'll be turned into a museum or something along those lines.

For everybody here, if interested:

Hearing this, I just burst into tears. And I haven't cried in a long, long time.

That frakking clown calling himself mayor of Berlin has destroyed dream of mine yesterday. MHG - THF and back in a Do-328.
I want him to pay for this. The day he has to resign, I'm gonna be in front of the city hall, laughing and partying like there was no tomorrow.

Actually, I'm having another idea for his fate, but this doesn't belong here.
