Overlapping Planes On Runway - BOOM!

Flying Captain Kurt's 9th FS Campaign (Which is awesome! Thanks Kurt) out of Tacloban and everytime I start a mission (in this case, Tacloban11.mis), my planes are stacked up into one another or, White Flight 6's tail boom is in my cockpit. White flight starts their takeoff roll and disentegrates into a ball of fire or my flight does the same thing after I start to roll. For grins, I've tried to change planes and that just ends up starting the mission with an explosion and end of mission. I've tried playing with the collision bubble, looking at the scenery.cfg and airbases.dat, clearing .index, .filelist, and .CDP files without satisfactory results. I started to look in Mission builder but I have too many panes installed for it to work. I think it's a simple fix but just not sure where. Any ideas?

P.S. For good follow-on information about the 9th FS, Here's a link to the squadron history: http://www.flyingknights.net/index.htm. The mission briefings in the campaign look like they came right from the unit history based on original typed pages of notes provided by Ken Clark, 9th Fighter Squadron fighter pilot/flight leader, who had the additional duty of Asst. Squadron Intelligence Officer/Historian the last year of the war with Japan.

I'm glad you are enjoying the campaign and thanks for the compliment. :wavey:

I don't have the overlap problem on my setup, but I think the best way to address it is to use the Mk_Mdl utility to change the collision bubble size of the planes on the runway. I'd try reducing the bubble size first.

Nothing in the .dp, airbases.dat, or any other files would affect the takeoff spacing for 2 flights of planes that I know of.

Also, CFS2 does not seem to be precise in placement of the planes on the runway at the start of a mission. If you refly the same mission several times you will note that the spacing between flights changes and the player aircraft may move to the right or left on the runway. You might also try re-flying the same mission a couple of times in a row and see if you can get a mission start that spaces the planes far enough apart.

The briefings and mission development were indeed taken from the unit operational records. The website you list is a great read.

Merry Christmas.

I just played around with it and increasing the bubble size seems to work to increase spacing. Try bubble size 8 first.

Doing this Cody's Way

Reading thru Cody Coyote's Mission Building Handbook may give you some hand-editing ideas - specifically the page [with details] below:

I'm NOT a Mission Builder by trade, but I remembered seeing this last time I read the Guide.... See if it helps and put those collision bubbles back where they were !

Thanks SC7500. That's good info and I did save it, but according to the article, it looks like Kurt has it set up OK in the .mis file. Here's the setup from that Tacloban11.mis for the player's flight:

[unit.8]
id=9107
type_id=3808
name=%name_string.8%
is_player_aircraft=1
allegiance=7
skill=3
aggression=2
payload=8

[formation.1]
id=6000
type=air
waypoint_path_id=5000
directive=2048
players_formation=1
formation_type=1
points=2
unit_id_position.0=9107,0,0.0,0.0,0.0
unit_id_position.1=9108,0,-300.0,-600.0,0.0
unit_id_position.2=9109,0,300.0,-600.0,150.0
unit_id_position.3=9110,0,600.0,-1200.0,150.0
unit_id_position.4=9111,0,1200.0,-1200.0,300.0
unit_id_position.5=9112,0,900.0,-1800.0,300.0
unit_id_position.6=9113,0,1500.0,-1800.0,450.0
unit_id_position.7=9114,0,1800.0,-2400.0,450.0

I did change the bubble in Mk_Mdl to 8 and it does seem to help but I haven't tried any close quarters air-to-air to see how it effects other aspects.

The unit id position is only for the in flight formation positions. It does not effect the runway positions.

From your pictures it looks like the collision bubble is set at 4 or 5. I can't think of anything else that might cuase that kind of bunching up. Make sure you adjust the right plane when you mess with the bubble. I think Tacloban 11 was the AI P-38 used for ground attack. If you don't want to go to a number 8, try 7. That's still fairly small.

This sounds like the same problem I had when trying to make a mission with a stacked deck of AI planes on a moving aircraft carrier, got most of the prob's sorted except this one. To closely stacked together and the mission starts with a multiple collision.

demorier, how do you get a stacked deck of moving AI aircraft on a moving carrier? If you have it figured out I sure wish you would post it.

It takes a fair bit of text editing in the "mis" file bob. But I never really got it to work without bugs. Might have another go soon as I get this Christmas video thing out of the way.
