P-40B/C

Perhaps you are using an older FM. My CFS 2 version of the P-40B, if anything acts a bit undepowered and seems realistic enough. I can outdive a Zero, but I sure can't outclimb or out turn him. Bearcat is usually very careful about these details when posting an aeroplane. Push comes to shove, try the attached FMs. Perhaps one of these will help you out.

Thanks Jadg. The -C is just too hot to be realistic. The .dp is wrong. I set 7.5mm French/Italian weapon factor for 10, 7.7mm/.303/at 11, .30 Browning(30-06)/German 7.9 at 12. Russian .30 rounds are the 7.62/54 Mosin Nagant round and comparable to the 7.7/.303 I follow 1% on the .50 M2 at 18.4. The .30s on this plane are 27 per side, I think the .50s are 67. Even added as a pair this is 33.5 per gun, that's a tad over 20mm Russian Shvak. Anything I hit just disintegrates, I like my opponents to put up a fight.

I can hold my own in Thicko's F2F against a Zero, my favorite plane for mixing it up with Zekes is Thicko's Gladiator in Dutch skins with the 2 .30s and 2 .50s. There ain't hardly anything can outturn a Gladys, but if they get a lucky shot on your wing you're dead meat. Hsu's I-16 is another good dogfighter if you're determined. I also love Yachico-san's N1K2-Ja with the 20mm gondolas. Hellcats, Corsairs, P-51s and P-38 make nice targets.

Thanks again

If this is the conversion by Bearcat there are 3 airfiles and cfg files in it so you can choose the way you want it to fly.My guess is you have the hot FM in it.I had Bearcat tone down the FM's and cfg files so that's why there are 3 of them.The way I have mine setup makes it one of the best and I used it in my AVG and CATF.

Talon

Thanks Talon. The only air files in my download are in two folders, and essentially they are hot, and very hot. I'll look for a normal one in the zipfile. I don't fly the P-40 much except in Russian skins against German aircraft, they hold their own against 109s but being the weirdo I am I find the I-16 is a little deadlier in my hands against 109s.

I'm glad you're recovering and take care of yourself.

Sorry about your HE-111's, but it sounds like you found some relief in the updates. What the original authors -- that would be me for the first conversion release -- had in mind was speed, quicks and firepower to my liking. Hope that solves the riddle. Told you guys before, its just a fantasy playset for me. Heh, those that can, do... :icon_lol:

Hey, it';s a good plane and conversion, but for making a mess I got the AH Hurricane with the 12 guns, set them from 3.2(!!!) to the correct 11, and make hamburger of whatever gets in front of me. I get off on getting close and watching the sparks from the bullet strikes. No FS9/X/2K2/2K4 for this kid, I wanna kill.

Rami,

Not being experienced in FM modelling, but very interested, looking at your changes for the P-40B I guess the key area is the following?

[flight_tuning]
cruise_lift_scalar=1
parasite_drag_scalar=1.4
induced_drag_scalar=1.4
elevator_effectiveness=1.6
aileron_effectiveness=1.6
rudder_effectiveness=1.6
pitch_stability=1
roll_stability=1
yaw_stability=1
elevator_trim_effectiveness=1
aileron_trim_effectiveness=1
rudder_trim_effectiveness=1

Am I to understand that the lower the value, the less effective a control is? And visa versa?

Pips,

Yes, but with the following clarification. Even though I fixed the engine specifications and power, as well as decreased the effectiveness of the engine thrust, in order to get the speed and climb rate right, I had to increase the drag factors above the baseline of 1.0 in order to slow the aircraft down further.

However, for the aileron, rudder, and elevator, I had to compensate by increasing the effectiveness of these control surfaces. If I didn't, the plane would turn and maneuver like it was in cement, due to the increased drag factors.

It's Only As Tough As You Make It...

Hi Pips;

I'm NOT an expert by any means, but I muddled through the "early learning" stages of AIR files with freeware like AirEdit... broke a LOT of otherwise decent aircraft before finally getting a clue.

Then I found AirWrench at MudPond.org, and my understanding made a quantum leap. It's intuitive, flexible, and an invaluable part of my aircraft tuning tool kit.

If I'm not mistaken, that page also holds the Holy Grail of airframe dynamics - the
Flight Dynamics Workbook.

Long story short, the more we all learn, the easier this hobby gets !

SC, I tried the link to the Workbook, it's dead. I might check out the demo for Airwrench but it's not my area of expertise.

The Dumb Bones

Yes, miamieagle, the ones on 71 and 55 are reworks or reskins of KM's P-40E that I used in the Tuskegee Airmen Campaigns. It is a fine aircraft when you put Lawdog's sound package in it. KM has a nice panel included, but I am kind of partial to Morton's fine work on panels and put any of Morton's available for most of my aircraft.

Who's There ?

Jerry Beckwith:
I've uploaded the workbook to my web site again, and added a link to it from
the main page. I also added a post on the SOH flight dynamics forum about
it.

Regards,
Jerry
