The Air Sea Rescue P-47s would loiter over the channel listening for any distress calls. When a call for help came, one P-47 would keep circling over the spot where the aircraft went down. The P-47s could also drop flares to guide motor launches to the down crew or small rafts for the crew. 65th Fighter Wing Detachment B became the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron when it got PBY Catalinas and moved Halesworth January 1945.
