P-51D 'Sierra Sue II' Repaint

John, your shots are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen in FSX! Looks like real photos! :encouragement:

Thanks John for this new paint, made me go and reinstall Mustang Tales after a complete fresh install of OS and FSX.
Was there a paint kit released for the MT and K packages? If so I'd like to get a copy if possible. Thanks again.

Joe

I already have Warbirdsim's Happy Jack's Go Buggy, so it looks like I'm in good shape for the Sierra Sue II repaint. This is a great aspect of flight sim, where people create what are basically works of art - and then give them away!

Thanks! :applause:

And Happy New Year!

Joe, please check your PM's. ; )

In addition to the video links I provided in my first post, here is another great one, which very clearly outlines how the process was set forth to restore 'Sierra Sue II' as if it were being run right back through the North American Aviation factory all over again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lo3EZ5lefyU

Another fine example of why the Warbirdsim Mustang is THE definitive P-51 for FSX & P3D!

Fabulous!

- Joseph

Thanks John for creating this beautiful paint! :encouragement:

John, is the PK any different to the one you gave me when you first released the WBS Mustangs?

I have a few repaints up here at the SOH but want to see if I can get better shine on them in P3D V3.1

Pat,

The paint kit you likely have is the one that was developed/made available for use with "Little Friends". I think the only other D-model paintkit that was developed and made available was for "Mustang Tales". Each is tailored for the models in those products, based on the different variants/individual configurations. With either paintkit, I just provide it to you to make whatever changes/adjustments you want and see fit in order to achieve the look you desire. The look of the 'Sierra Sue II' repaint isn't achievable by just using either paintkit "straight out of the box", as is, but if you adjust the base metal values through the diffuse/diffuse alpha/specular/and specular alpha textures/templates to match what I have done, you'll get the same results. (Granted, I don't think I provided specular alpha templates with the "Little Friends" paintkit, as I wasn't using them at that time, but I did provide them with the "Mustang Tales" paintkit - since coming to understand all that they can do and provide, some years back, they are just as important a piece of the equation as any of the the other texture elements.)

Although they aren't correct for the aircraft, since it never flew long-range escort missions (rather it performed the most dangerous task of ground support), I think the 108-gallon tanks look really cool.

Best wishes for the New Year John,

I spent all day with your airplane to take a good look at the DR rendering versus the custom cube map.

IMHO: Overall I think LM needs to tweak gamma a tiny bit with their DR rendering engine, but light and color are subjective to the user's eye and always open to interpretation. What we have to work with at this point is extremely effective and will undoubtedly improve as the tech is explored.

Your model/texture seems to be spot on in P3DV3.1 and doesn't appear to suffer any appreciable negative impact using DR. Of course...my opinion only. The textures including alpha/spec/bump/ and their respective alphas all seem to work in DR much as you originally intended if using the custom cube map. BTW, that particular cube map is always the first thing I modify when updating P3D/FSX/FSX_ST.

Have a look at the screens and see how they suit you.

I think it's just brilliant that you're still adding to your creations after all this time. I have all the WBS P-51s and there hasn't been a day since the B/C came out that I've not had at least a couple in daily use. I can't speak for systems or flight models, but for the perfect look and sit of the thing and for all those insane, loving little details, they are the best. If you want the pure spirit of the P-51 - it's alive and well at Warbirdsim.
