Packing This Week

Guys, (generic non-gender specific term if there are ladies about).

I am going to load my BPF onto the laptop today and tomorrow and continue to work the missions. I won't be able to fly any of them on the laptop; (not powerful enough machine), but I will be able to continue to build and be on here from time to time over the course of the next 60 - 90 days or so.

The big PC is going to be catalogued, packed away nicely in shipping boxes, and put on a ship to Florida this week.

Hopefully there are enough families returning to the States from Germany this month to fill the ship quickly.

Achim, I have thoroughly enjoyed being in Germany over the course of the last 3 years! One of my regrets is that I was unable to visit you in person up north while here. Your country and your people have been wonderful to my family and me. I have heard many say that Schwabisch Germans are least friendly. If that is true, I have not seen any rudeness while here in Baden-Wurttemberg so the rest of your people must be fantastic. (Natürlich, da meine Vorfahren waren Deutsche, könnte ich ein bisschen voreingenommen sein.)

Perhaps now that I am going to be retired I will have opportunities to return to Germany and visit on Urlaub.

Though, I have applied in Florida for teaching jobs in the public schools there, so I may actually be working again. perhaps as soon as this fall.

Cocoa Beach - Melbourne area.

I was born in Jax. Sounds like you'll be in a nice area. You'll have to get use to the southern accent again.

its a shame Civy life isn't more like military life. It took my Dad a while to adjust. He was 30yrs Navy. (20 active 10 rev). Well you have this Navy Brat for support.

How much longer till your state side?

Good luck...

Retiring eh? If you have any in-service injuries or illnesses, be sure to see your local DAV (Disabled American Veterans) chapter/rep to help you file your VA claim (free of charge) when you get to Florida. Best of luck to you in your new life!

Lee,

I wish you and Jodi well in your journey homeward. I'm sure you will enjoy Florida, although I'd imagine that the climate will be an adjustment for you and Jodi. I received your e-mail this morning, and will respond in kind.

Already submitted the initial application packet to VA in Landstuhl last week.

Should have an exam at the VA Clinic in Melbourne in September.

Should have decision by November according to the VA here in Germany.

I hope you have better luck with the VA then my Dad has. He is considered a peace time vet so he is getting no where with them. Even though he was in from 1972 to 1992. He never set foot in an active combat zone. Being in naval aviation he wouldn't unless shot down and P-3s don't go near land all that much when looking for subs. So he get nota.

My son was in the Navy in the 70s, and in the last year or so he had a medical problem, and he didn't seem to have any problems with the VA in Albuquerque got him in and he had a operation and was out the same day. But I do understand that some vets are having problems with the VA in ABQ.

I have a service-connected neck injury. When I retired and went through my separation physical at the VA hospital in Lake City, FL, the doc asked me if my neck was giving me any problems. Well, that particular day it wasn't, so I answered truthfully, "Not today." The doc notated on the paperwork that I was not having neck problems, so my application for disability was denied.

That was way back in 1997. I never appealed it. Didn't want to go through the friggin hassle of the paperwork. But have always wondered if it is too late to try again?

My neck problems will never get better; only worse. I just live with it, but do I have to?

With all the attention on the VA now, maybe worth trying again?

Chief,

No, it is not too late. Any injury that is service connected that deteriorates over the years is still service connected. You need to contact the VA and apply anew.

You tell them that the documented neck injury that was not giving you problems at separation is now affecting you in an adverse way and you need to have it re-evaluated.

Thanks Ddog. After I get to P'cola in a few weeks, and sign up to be seen at Family Practice, I will begin that process. I really don't expect a good outcome from doing so, but I hope I am wrong. NC
