Painting the FDG2 B-17F (early)

AGAS 5

Charter Member
Well I guess I sorted what I was going to paint up next ( I do have some others in the shed though ).

Has anyone noticed if these are anomalies with the mapping on the B-17F (early) ?

I'm just trying to figure out if I've missed a bit or not..... sometimes you can chase your tail with this sort of thing :banghead:

Cheers,

Pete

oh.... nearly forgot.... here she is - a long tour with the 63rd Bomber Squadron and looking a bit weary.....

Pete

A BIG Thanks there AGAS 5, ...this is truly a good Christmas. (expected coal...)

Have been using the 1% Gmax crate b/c of the high FR's, ...but this FDG2 bird will move up into the prime slot, ...and Gmax will move into the dedicated AI hole.

It has the FR's ~ equal to that of the KM B-24, ...so it is fine for a flyable mount.

The B-17F(e) is ones of my favorites, ...and it's been a long wait for this one.

Your skins ROCK, ...and am really looking forward to'em.

Thanks Pete.

Ta Blue Devil :jump:

She's nearly finished... just some small touch ups tomorrow then I'll upload the old girl...

Talk about syncronicity....I was just using the early F B-17 the other day and thinking that she needed some weathered paint. Looking very good Pete!

Just add Bombsite...

Converted the .dp to ACM std., ...and converted a Bombsite. (major pain but it works w/ all the FDGv2 B-17s...)

...it was worth it...

Skin on dude.

P.S. a bare metal "G" would be Sweeeet.

Thanks Pete.

It looks to me like untextured Polygon’s, you can do a simple test, make a pure black texture and name it the same way as the original texture, don’t forget to backup your original textures, than you can see if a poly isn’t textured.

Nice lookin' site BD, where'gha git it?:kilroy:

Thanks, ...made it.

1. Started w/ the .bmp from the KM B-24 (200mph), ...and the 155mph .bmp from where I can't remember.
2. Built the gauge panel from scratch.
3. Put the 200mph on a .64 zoom 39.45 deg "VIEW_LEFT_UP_WINDOWS=38" (Page Up)
4. Put the 155mph on a .64 zoom 57.50 deg "VIEW_DOWN_WINDOWS=39" (Page Down)
5. Put the panel on a [Window03] pop-up (F9)
6. Use the autopilot for Alt. and wing-level, ...and steer w/ the rudder.

Use the 200mph for under 10 thousand feet and skip-bombing.
Use the 155mph for everything else.

Puts'em down the chimney from 2 to 25 thousand feet.

Will put together a package if I can figger out where the 155mph .bmp came from (will accept help...)

Have it now for the OH_B-25, KM B24, ...and now the FDGv2 B-17 (all different sizes and scales, ...though they look and work identical)

...Call it my ACM Neither-Norden...

Thanks BD. That's a good looking sight. I just got the Austin sight set up for the DWare B-17s and it's a pretty good sight too, but I think that your sight will be much more flexible.

Well, the old girl is uploaded and should appear soon.

I found the problem area for the texture mapping on the nose - it's not fixable. Moving the nose art slightly forward at least got rid of the orange streak.

Thanks for your help and encouragement :jump:

Hi BD,

To fix on my CFS2 I just copied the parts.bmp from the original B-17F early into the new mustang texture folder of this aircraft and overwrite the parts bmp in there and the tire and undercarriage show up. Hope this helps. Looking forward to your bombsight for this aircraft.

Pete, great work on this repaint. Thanks. Always looking for new skins for the FDG B-17's.

Well that'll teach me to do my final testing with air starts....:banghead:

Sorry... :redf:

I'll jump in and check it out then put up a fix. Thanks Blue Devil & JP127.

Thanks JP, ...used the B-17F Late/"parts.bmp".

EDIT: Beautiful skin Pete, ...Thanks.

P.p.s.
Replace this in the "aircraft.cfg" file to get the correct tire "squat".

Wow, thanks for the mod info blue devil - looks pretty good !!

I found the problem - I inadvertently saved the offending texture in .bmp 888-8 format.... with no alpha :redf:

I've just uploaded a small fix for ' The Mustang ' . Users can either download it or as you guys pointed out - just copy one of the original files over.

I'm doing the B-17E next... this one will have a newer finish - just like it arrived in Mareeba in 1942 with the 19 Bomber Group.

Cheers,

Pete

Very nice work Pete! I've already done a couple of B-17E textures for the Pacific, but these F mods will definately make a nice addition.

One thing though, from memory, the rubber 'boots' on the leading edges were removed from most aircraft serving in the Pacific.

Thanks Daniel, much appreciated. I noticed a couple of your files here... where do you keep your work lately ?

I know about the removal of the de-ice boots... but I thought that was towards the end of 1943... certainly by the time the B-24's arrived. I have a couple of ref pics with them in 42/43.

Cheers,

Pete
