I have ended up with making a few more Iran Tomcat repaints for the IRIS FSX F-14 Tomcat pack and now it has evolved into 4 texture sets which span the 30 + years of “Ali-cat” service in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">Iran</st1lace></st1:country-region>.

1. F-14A "H6" (later 3-6006), as seen at the Grumman Calverton factory in 1976 with temporary <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">US</st1lace></st1:country-region> delivery markings. "The Asia minor" camouflage scheme makes a rather interesting view compared to the grey USN Tomcats.

2. F-14A "3-6003" of the 8.TFB Imperial Iranian Air Force at <st1lace w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Khatami</st1:City> <st1:State w:st="on">AB</st1:State></st1lace> in late 1976. This aircraft shows of the standard IIAF markings (but it has not got the 8th Tactical Fighter Base badge on the tail). Of interest is also how the number serial is in arabic letters on the left side of the nose and on the right tail fin.

3. F-14A "3-6079" of the 82nd TFS/8.TFB of the post 1979 revolution IRIAF as it looked rather war weary in 1986 during the Iran-Iraq war. I have tried to replicate a worn and dirty look compared to the other repaints. This was the last Tomcat to be delivered to Iran and also one of the most successful during the long war with (from Tom Cooper and Farzad Bishop research) with 5 kills: 1xMig-21, 1xMig-23 and 3xMirage F1EQ.

4. F-14A "3-6020" of the 82nd TFS/8.TFB, IRIAF as it looked painted in the current gray/blue paint scheme after a major overhaul in 2008. This aircraft shows the typical Iranian 4x-Aim-7 and 4xAim-9 a2a missile loadout which was/is often used due to the limited stocks of the Aim-54 Phoenix.

are actually mission capable......

It would be nice if relations with Iran got good enough to be able to see some Cats still flying in person speaking as a US citizen.

That sure is the big question. What we do know is that at least the Iranians have managed to overhaul and rebuild many of their worn out Tomcats from the war with Iraq during the 90's and the following decade. Formations of over 15 aircraft have been seen. But this only tells us that they are in flyable status and not if they are combat capable with working sub systems. US SIGINT probably have information on Iranian F-14 AWG-9 radar emissions....but they will probably not tell us at the SoH forum...lol

People assume that other Air Forces around the world are incompetant, untrained and poor. This is hardly the case. A few facts about Iran for you:

1. Iran's airspace is nearly impenetrable; at the very least, their ability to thwart aerial attacks is strong. They have some of the most advanced anti-aircraft capabilities in the world...fielded and ready.

2.Iran is NOT poor. They can afford just about whatever they want.

3. Iran is a civilized country with modern engineering capabilities. They don't require parts from us or anyone else to keep their aircraft flying. Through careful fleet management, they've made their tomcats last longer than ours.

4. The foreign technology they hold, such as their F-14s, are highly modified and upgraded by their aerospace industry.

5. Their pilots are well trained veterans of war---and they are some of the only pilots on the planet with REAL air to air experience.

The Iranian F-14 mission capable rates are consistently around the mid 90's, which is fairly standard for a well-managed fighter program with an unlimited parts supply.


We must never rest on our laurels. There are more than a few countries with modern and fairly well sized Air Forces.

I,ve heard that before,sure sound familiar,something about the forth large
army in the world..Iraq..If Iran it,s twice as strong as Iraq ,they may last twice as long until M1A2 Abrams march thru Teheran. ..Just because US it,s not doing it doesnt mean Iran would stand a slight chance. There is no air force today to prevail over US airpower.Tigisfat,you have no facts ,it,s wishful thinking at best..Iran ,Syria and Lybia were frozen with fear after the saw how fast US can get to them..Got theirs balls back only after they saw american people would not tolerate another war..Now they just overcompensate for the initial scare,nothing more.If this kind of day dreaming makes iranians fell tough or secure it,s fine, but poking a caged tiger with a stick may not be that smart in the end,..not even when the stick is made in Iran ..Hopefully I will never have to tell you someday "..told you so.." By the way, US has more potent F14,s in storage behinde an AMARG Porta John than all iranian AF..lol

Although, it's worth mentioning that whilst winning the air war helps matters, it's of little real benefit to a guerrilla type warfare that requires ground troops being sent into towns and cities ala Afghanistan/Iraq.
The Iranians are well aware that the American armed forces are overstretched and it's people generally have no stomach to be caught up in yet another conflict.
