JG 71 Phantoms: Last flight
I guess time waits for no man... or Phantom in this case.
I saw Phantoms from JG 71 fly several times when I was in Northern Germany and they always brought back memories of watching those beasts in action in Vietnam, scramble from airbases in Korea and their low level warning flights over Manila when Marcos was under siege by the Filipinos. No matter where I saw 'em, they always brought goose bumps to my arms when they were dropping ordnance on the bad guys or in afterburn taking off, particularly at night when the AB flames stretched out behind the aircraft for at least its own length.
No matter that the Luftwaffe has moved on to newer aircraft, we can still fly 'em from Wittmundhafen in North Germany thanks to Ian Elliot's wonderful recreation of JG 71's base at Wittmundhafen Flugplatz.
By the way, if you ever visit the Jever Beer Brewery in Jever, not far from Wittmund, there is some JG 71 memorabilia in the little bar that they maintain for tasting the Jever line of beers.
