'Photographers...'

I have one, and it's been excellent! I took it on my South Africa trip, and worked flawlessly (I don't count user error :mixedsmi:). The battery pack lasted the whole 10 day trip on one charge, and I took about 600 pictures. It's been much better than any of the Canons I've had.

D40 good camera but for me two main negatives which may or may not be important to others.

1) No auto exposure bracketing - hence HDR photos are much harder to obtain (if you don't know what it is - google HDR Photography - but essentially it is multiple exposures of the same scene capturing more detail in shadows and bright areas and processing in a way to see that detail - carried to an extreme it gives very kewl effects especially on equipment like cars, planes, etc)

and - less important

2) A bit short on MPs but that only matters if you do "blowup" pictures. You can always reduce resolution but you can't add it. Not a huge consideration at all but I'd have gone for more because that fits with my interests in landscape photography.

Camera selection is a complicated process anymore - I think you more than ever need to know what your looking to produce and work backwards.

The big plus to the D40) (besides price) is that it is a fairly small camera which I prefer. I use a Panasonic G1 (micro 4/3rds system) from work and am looking at an Olympus 620 purchase in the next year or so. The D40 is a good camera for the price. Enjoy it Ed!

PS I've added an HDR of a car to give a sense of what HDR photography can do. Multiple exposures processed through HDR software like Photomatix can give this kind of stuff. Sometimes it can be done from a single image. Photography is way beyond simple documentation in this digital manipulation age. I want my camera to give me the raw materials when I choose to do this kind of stuff. Not my pic BTW.

Maybe not the best, but not bad from my backyard in a pretty light polluted area with a scope that isn't that great for photography...

I started off last year with a D70S, upgraded to a D80 a week after and I've just bought a D300. The D40 is a great little camera and you can use a multitude of lenses on it...only issue you'll face is that non AF-S lens will not autofocus.
 
Sorry I didn't see this earlier Panther. Every Nikon owner I know takes Mr Rockwell's advice with a large pinch of salt. He regularly divides the digitial photogrpahy community.

But now you have got one ( I would have recommended at least the D60 - the D40 is very out of date now) , I would advise you also become a regular at these forums -

You'll need to register but as a long time Nikon owner myself I can tell you there is no better place. It's the 'Sim-Outhouse' of the Nikon world!

Now that's what I call a camera. I prefer film cameras over digital when I want to do real photography and want absolute control over what my camera is doing. I have two mid to late 70s Canon AE-1s and slew of lenses. I had an old Argus from the early 60s, but lost it in a move a decade back. My wife has two vintage cameras that belonged to her grand parents...one of them is a Leica I think....have to dig it out of the closet....I do know that he purchased the camera in Germany back in the 50s.

A few years back, I picked up an old old old camera, from the late 1910s early 1920s...made entirely of tin, with a very simple shutter mechanism. Used 4 inch wide film that you had to roll yourself. I got it at a thrift store for $1 and thought I had found a real treasure....nope, got on E-bay and there were like 250 of them listed and the highest going price was $5 or $6...did some research and this camera was super massed produced...one of the first affordable cameras to hit the market.
