PNW Mesh problems?

I switched from FSgenesis mesh to rhumbaflappy's free mesh. It works fine with UT and I'm much happier with the results. With FSgenesis I had many airports sunk in holes or up on plateaus....that has almost entirely gone away. I also have far fewer rivers climbing up the sides of mountains, which indicates to me that the rf mesh and UT are more closely aligned. It's free...why not try it? :wavey:

Well for one thing rf mesh is lod 7 & 8. FSGenesis goes all the way up to 11 in the US and Canada. Makes a huge difference.

While it is true that Rhumbaflappy's mesh is "only" LOD 5, 7 and 8, there is something he did that resulted in his LOD7 looking a lot more like LOD9 or 10. I have compared screen shots I took using his LOD7 to screenshots with the FSG LOD 10 US Mesh...and they are pretty darn close. Rhumba's LOD 8 mesh, which covers the Pacific and most of Europe and North Africa is a dream. I have no need to add higher level mesh for anyplace I fly that is covered by his LOD8 mesh.

Sidney, I'd be happy to try the Rumbafluppy mesh. If I remember right it was a huge download. I think that's why I resorted to buying FSG2010. I'll download it if I knew where to get it from.

Rich, I'm not sure what you're trying to point out. Are you implying that the FSgenesis is better?
..You'll have to excuse my display of ignorance here because I don't know. I was under the impression FSG was the creme of the crop.

My understanding of mesh is that every lod number cuts the number of meters in half. The number of meters is how far apart the points are. So if you have a mountain that has up and down jagged peaks for a few miles then with lod 9 you will have a new point every 76 meters. With lod 10 it will be every 38 meters and with lod 11 it will be every 19 meters. So if you're looking at a mountain that has all those jagged points there is no way lod 7 will look like lod 9. However, if the mountain is fairly uniform you wouldn't tell much difference.

One thing I learned at the fsgenesis forum is how buffers work. If you have lod 11 only, you will see that for a short distance and then you will see the default. If you also have lod 10 you will see lod 11 for a short distance and lod 10 for a somewhat longer distance and then the default. The sim only puts an lod looking out for so many miles, otherwise it would put too much of a strain on your computer. So you should have more than one lod for buffers. I have lod 4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11. They are all available from fsgenesis. If you get his annual subscription, whish is on sale right now, you can download all that. Some are large files so you really can't do it on dialup.

If you compare the same lod from fsg to fsgenesis I don't think you'd see much difference. Maybe some very minor stuff once in a while. A few months ago I was looking to get some lod 19 mesh and looked at fsg 2010 and since I had 2008 I could have gotten a discount. But I went with fsgenesis and am glad I did.

It's a matter of individual taste. I'd rather have slightly less detailed accuracy than highly detailed inaccuracy. Accuracy is determined by the quality of the data, detail by the number of data points. More data points don't guarantee more accuracy, just nicer eye candy...until you see all those airports sitting in holes. :kilroy:

Oleboy, you can download the mesh here...

If I recall correctly the DEM7 is worldwide cover, the DEM8 is only some select areas in Europe. The files have to be downloaded individually, but it only took me about half and hour or less.

Rich, thanks. I need the knowledge. I'll go to the FSgenesis forums and have a look around. There may be a purchase in my future. Specially if it's on sale. I'll have a look anyway.

Thanks Sidney for the link to Rhumbas skydrive. I've got something in the works behind the scene with another member ;)

Oh, I agree it's all individual choice. Whatever makes a person happy. And accuracy although I'd never know the difference if a point was a meter off. One main reason I went with fsgenesis this time instead of back with fsg was the high reputation Justin Tyme has had for several years with his quality mesh products.

Hey Oleboy, thanks for this thread. My Seattle looks just like yours did with the ships on land and suck. I spent a whole day moving stuff around in the scenery library with no luck. Guess I need to remove UT also. :salute:

Your situation is worse off than mine. I can't really tell what that is. I know it's Seattle..but.
....With some help I am getting mine to look better. Not perfect. Just better.

Gentlemen, I don't know what problem you're having but I doubt if the culprit is UT. I've been using UT for a few years and have flown all over the area since I spent most of my adult life there and never had one problem. Maybe you're doing something wrong in the install or the order or something else. If you could write down what you're doing with the install I'll try to help.

EDIT: OleBoy, I just looked at your pics. Part of it looks like a double coastline and the likely problem is a faulty install.

What you might try is this. Uninstall your entire FS9 and start over. Install the sim and the patch. Then install UT and see what it looks like.

Hi Rich,
The coastlines are the only real issue currently. Things were worse. I have no idea what's going on because at one time everything was in it's place and looked good. Up until I installed FSglobal 2010 I had not seen this. By the way, all textures have been backed up for starting fresh, but I have nothing installed that can't be deactivated in the scenery library. Which is minimal. As for the double coast lines, I'm baffled. The only thing I can think that would be causing it is the library order. I've got things where they need to be. Unless the information I read in the UT support threads is wrong.

edit; I just realized FSG2010 had a sp1 update to fix issues very similar to mine, but in Florida. I just applied that and will have a peek. Though I'm not holding my breath that it does anything for my situation on the West coast

OleBoy - you still have default scenery files enabled to cause that double coastline. You need to do as I explained in my e-mail - compare your UT scenery folder with the default scenery/namw/scenery folder to check for duplicate files, and disable them.

A.

Good morning Aardvark. I was just working towards that stage. I just finished shutting things off in the library.

You will need to check For duplicates of HL9*****.bgl and HP9*****.bgl files in the default folder. Rename them with an .XXX extension.

A.

I have a different issue all together. I was going to look into the files you mentioned for the double coastline. I don't even have Ultimate Terrain. The UT files I thought were for that addon were actually for Ultimate Traffic. I think I am about do for a re-install anyway. My FS9 install is getting cluttered and slow. Start up takes almost as long as FSX. :mixedsmi:
