Possible new computer on the horizon

Hey Ted,

How much space would you say is acceptable between a CPU cooler and a top mounted fan?

I was reading a review on the Storm Scout where the reviewer mentioned that there may be some clearance issues between some aftermarket CPU Coolers and the top mounted chassis fan.

Edit: Added link to review.

I don't believe with the coolers we have used that it has been a problem. We have had several SCOUT platforms in test with everything from Zalman 9900 to dual fan liquid cooling.

Last night, I made my final orders from Newegg.com to bring my new system into being. A nice LG SATA DCD/CD burner, 3 SATA control cables, a DVI ready Acer 19 inch non-wide screen monitor (the Acer 19" inch that I ordered from Walmart.com does not have DVI input and will be returned as soon as it arrives at the store) and Win 7 Ultimate. I did find a way to reduce the cost of Win 7 Ultimate. Instead of shelling out $280 for the retail package, I went with the OEM Builders version of Win 7 Ultimate...same thing, just in a much less shiny package.

Total price of my Newegg purchase last night....$392. Once I return the Acer from Walmart, that will bring the cost of this purchase down to $263...which includes nearly $14 in shipping fees.

Total price of my new system: $1036. Which I feel is one heck of a bargain on a system with this many features, this much power, and this much upgradability. I don't believe that I could have gone to BestBuy and gotten nearly as much system for this money going with a boxed system.

Parts will begin arriving in the next day or two. Once I have all the parts in hand, I will take a few days to put the system together, get it running....then watch out FS9 airplanes...I will be crashing you at 50 FPS instead of 24.8 FPS!

The UPS man was here today! Delivered the case, CPU and cooler/fan, 1TB HD, RAM, graphics card, and PSU. In the next couple days, the MOBO, DVD drive, monitor and SATA control cables will be here. And Win 7 Ulitmate. And then I can begin building the MONSTER!

And the UPS man came back again today! And he brought me the last 3 packages! Now I have all the bits and pieces to build my MONSTER. Just got to have time to put it all together. I have two women...my wife, Deb, and her sister, Tina, who are throwing To Do lists at me.

That pile in the corner of my office....somehow doesn't seem like much for $1083...but once the it's all together and I am playing with POWER, it will.

I unboxed the Cooler Master CM690 Advanced case an hour or so ago, and just now stopped staring at it with my jaw on the floor. WOW! What a case! So much room, so many places to install BIG cooling fans, so many places to install drives. And the base is HUGE...will most likely have to build a new top for my printer stand so that it is deep enough to fully support the case. It's monstrous! Weighs a ton. Love the look of it....flat black and chrome. So evil looking.

That is a sweet case. I really like the removable HDD racks that allow you to take out or install HDD's by just opening the side of the case. That is a brilliant idea.
