I've just uploaded the PBJ-1C, or Marine version of the B-25C. Jarheads do love their Peanut Butter & Jelly. It is not, however, just a blue B-25. The retractable ventral turret has been replaced by a retractable radome for a surface search radar, and that position can also be occupied by a 300-gallon drop tank for long-range missions. The radome is operated by the EXITS command. The droptank is a selectable payload. The PBJ also had two fixed .50s firing forward in addition to the bombardier's flexible gun, and sported a single .50 in the tail position with the tailcone replaced by flat plexiglass plate.:engel016:

The USMC did quite a bit of level bombing against Rabaul and the surrounding airfields with their PBJs. VMB 413 was the initial squadron and on completion of their tour, were releived by VMB 423. They flew their PBJ-1Ds from Green and Stirling Islands (others as well I would assume) and attacked Rabaul in harassing raids during the night hours and with full squadron formation bombing during the day long after the war had moved north and west and Rabaul had been left to wither on the vine.

The MDL file is not 'shined' and therefore does not do justice to Sopwith's beauitiful skin job. I need to send her in to the shine shop for much needed attention. :wiggle:

However, I expect Blue Devil will be doing some mods to this aircraft, so we'll probably see several updates. :typing:

Hi SC!

Since you posted vertical fins texture corrections, may I humbly suggest another small correction?

The cowlings of all TR's B-25C skins should not have the individual exhaust stubs, since TR modeled single exhaust pipes, one per each side, which all early B-25C's had. Both cannot exist together, individual exhaust stubs around the cowlings were introduced in the "C" version late production runs and became a standard feature for all subsequent versions from then on. They could be kept only if the two exhaust pipes were removed from the *.mdl.

I also have a small comment about the wing outer panels, which, in all B-25's, had a zero dihedral angle, that is perfectly flat with only the inner wing panels showing a positive dihedral. TR's models seem to have a slight outer negative dihedral, but that cannot be taken care of with just a paint touchup.

Technically, that is the way the aircraft left the plants in CA and KS. However, the individual stacks made the B-25 the loudest airplane in Army Air Corps....and very visible at night. Our aircraft are late model C/Ds that have been retrofitted with the single ring, extended exhaust for noise and exhaust flame suppression. We just did not have any old cowlings in stock. It must have been another Pappy Gunn deal....:costumes:

However, I never liked that part to begin with, so I may remove it for poly-reduction purposes and we may get a couple of extra FPS out of the old girl. :ernae:

I hope you and SC know well mine was not criticism but a suggestion. I would never criticise one's volunteer work, respect for other people sits on the very top of my personal values list.

Older SOH members know my love for historically accurate details, which comes from my plastic modeller past. When we share an aircraft with good, precise details we all enjoy the best. Let's think of the astounding efforts done by some of our scenery masters to give us historical airports and/or other places to fly from.

Even Microsoft used for years the "as real as it gets" motto.

If I were you, I wouldn't erase the exh pipes for your B-25C, TR. That's an early "C" which was deployed in vast numbers at the beginnig of WWII, a needed model to complete our great CFS2 collection.

Few years back, I had the sheer luck of stumbling on a fabolous book, published by Narkiewcz/Thompson, written by Norm Avery and titled "North American Aviation Aircrafts 1934-1998, volume 1".

Norm Avery wrote "B-25 Mitchell, The Magnificent Medium" as well and he worked from the 1940's until the beginning of the 1980's for NAA, Lockheed and Northrop. Initially a draftsman and later a design engineer, he was involved with many NAA planes in this book: BT-9, AT-6, B-25, P-51, P-82, FJ-1 and F-86 as well as the B-70, B-1, Lockheed L-1011 and Northrop Radioplane MX project.

The B-25 blueprints in this book show a shorter exhaust pipe starting aft of the cowl flaps. This could be your answer to a few more fps maintaing the model alive. The book also mentions about when the first Kansas-built B-25C-10 were equipped with Clayton "S" type flame-damping exhausts around the engine cowling. And this could be a great excuse for yet another version of your splendid B-25's to add to the collection.

You're not going to stop here, I hope. What about fps friendly later versions, like the G, H and the J, of this great plane?

If you wish me to, I'll be very glad to scan Norm Avery's B-25 blueprint schemes drawn in a 1/144 scale and send them over to you for your modelling pleasure...:d

...to have the blueprints when you get time to send them. but I'm not sure that there are any gaps in the B-25 line left to fill. There are several later models like the J and H out there already I think. :wave:

..in the US you see a lot of each model B-25 with the single/dual-ring exhausts reinstalled purely for noise suppression..note the photo below hilited in yellow...a combination of single-ring and direct exhaust....and note that the combo exhaust is the shortened version. :wiggle:

Is this beautiful bird flyable? I ask because the zip is only 1.5meg, and flyable models are usually much larger than that. :)

..., Pips. These are full-featured, relatively low poly-count models yielding great FPS, and they still look pretty damned good. AND, there are now three versions (PBJ, 25C/D and Gunship) in the download ques.....with nearly a dozen different skins and the wardrobe is growing. Not to mention available accessories like custom droptanks, animated turrets and radomes. :typing:

OMG! What a concept! :jump:
