PRB's CCAA DC-2 Thing

Taking off for Leg 4 (SKBG – SKBO)
Take off weight: 17435 LBS
Fuel: 765 LBS
Cargo: 4000 LBS

So I get to Palonegro and wonder what I'll be taking over to Bogota on the next trip. Aa soon as we landed they sent us off to the edge of the field to some decrepit looking old aluminum hangar, outside of which was, among other things, several 16” naval shells. Live ones too, near as I can tell. How the heck did they get these? Better not ask, these people don't look too friendly... They want me to take them to Bogota. The darned things weight 1900 pounds each! I told them I could take two. Hope they don't roll down to the back of the plane on take off. That would be interesting. Tied them down with some old rope and some duck tape. Should be fine.

Duct tape should be fine. A couple of 2x4's no problem. Maybe they are having a celebration like our 4th of July? There's an idea.

Hey Paul!

Too feeble so far to give you a holla ... say thanks and good luck!!

So hear ya go .... Thanks! and Good Luck!!

uh, nice boolits ... might better run some bailin' wire along with the duck tape ... like rebar in concrete?

[thinking to myself as I smile, turn, and walk off to get dinner]

"Man, I hope those boolits don't break loose in the plane while he's flying ... whew"

Kodaks: 1) Climbing out of SKBO, flying “IFR”... 2) Crossing the big river in that big valley, about half way there. 3) Steep descent over the ridge and down the hill to SKMZ. 4) Final approach. Nice thing about the DC-2 is you can drop the gear at any speed, which means they make nice speed brakes, in addition to providing soft wheels to land on. If you remember to put them down, that is...

Well, you see, these fish sticks are ambidextrous. That means they can breath air as well as water, so it's ok. That's what they told me back in Bogata anyway...

Taking off for Leg 6 (SKMZ - SKPI)
Take off weight: 17649 LBS
Fuel: 979.2 LBS
Cargo: 4000 LBS

Off to Pitalito, loaded to the “gunnels” with 17 pallets of cordless extention cords. I plan to "zig" east a bit via SKNV in the hopes of avoiding the tallest of the tall mounatins along the way. I'll let you know how it turns out...

Well the plan to zig east has befallen an ill fate. Take off out of SKMZ sort of forced me west down that other valley. I'm now headed for the VOR station at SKNV, but the course change has costed some time and gas. Looks like I will be able to make SKNV without busting the 15K cieling, so all is well again, more or less...

Ah, like alligator gar....

Yep, and frogs...!

Well, I made it over the mountains and am coming upon that river I crossed on the last leg, which is good because the airport (SKNV) is just beyond the VOR station (NEIVA) I'm locked on to, both of which are on "this" side of the river (I think). Then I can "zag" back south west to our ultimate destination.

Arrived SKPI
Flight Time: 01:32:52
Fuel Used: 547 LBS

Well that was interesting. Since there is no nav aid at SKPI, my engenieous plan was to use the FLA VOR (near SKFL) and the NDB station at SKPP to help me find SKPI. Since I was coming from SKNV, steering 220 degrees, the destination field (SKPI) would be under me when the two stations were at 180 degrees from each other (more or less). It worked out pretty good actually, but as the airport was actualy a bit beyond the “SKPP – FLA line”, I started to panic as I started to approach that line and couldn't see the field. Soon thereafter I spotted the airport and landed with minimal incident.

I better get my butt in gear or there won't be anymore beer & BBQ at the finish line when I get there.
