Problem making a bitmap

I am trying to make a bitmap to use as a water texture in FS9. I am using MS paint from Windows 7 to make it. I can made an image with the color I liked but when saved it was in something like 588 x 588 size. I finally figured out how to change and save it as 256 x 256 but then I noticed it is in a PNG image format, and that the Bit Depth is 24.

Will a PNG image file with a Bit Depth of 24 work in FS9?

MS paint appears to not have a way to convert PNG to BMP or to change the bit depth value.

Do I need to convert the PNG to BMP? And how to change bit depth value?
