Question about killing another human

i don't believe in state sanctioned murder. if it's wrong for individuals to kill, it's wrong for ANYONE to kill.

my preferred method of dealing with violent criminals and repeat offenders of any kind would have the same net effect as capitol punishment, but without the costs and burdens.
you pick an island somewhere, far enough away from everywhere else, so that anyone who tried to leave would be committing suicide. a one time drop off of tools and materials that would allow them to feed themselves. non-powered farming equipment, seed stock, and a small herd of protein. you only do this once, at the very beginning. after that, anyone who is a 3 time or more offender, and anyone who kills, maims or murders, goes to the island. just like "escape from new york".
cost is minimal, criminals are removed from society, and they are not a public burden as they would be in a conventional prison.

- however -

at the same time, changes need to be made to our society that remove some of the reasons people become criminals in the first place. these would be quite costly, but in the end, worth every penny, imo. a better educational system, for starters. one that, in the early stages, teaches people how to be proper members of society. children are like a sponge. they can learn compassion as easily as they learn anything else. there needs to be something put into place in every part of our society that allows for common sense consequences and reaction to any situation on an individual basis.
thomas jefferson said something to the effect of "the spirit of the law serves mankind, but the letter of the law serves no one". i agree with that. on top of all this, common sense needs to supersede everything else. the idea here being that (i believe) if you set someone up for success, they usually will succeed.

Here's my take on all this...

Thou shalt not kill.... that's a good one to remember.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you...... another good one.

Turn the other cheek...

Good not only due to their source, but because they make sense... common sense if you will, a sense many have forgotten.

In my 39 years as an adult I have read the Bible many times over, and there are many truths in that book even an athiest could accept as just good common sense. Unfortunately we live in times that are such that a man will slap you in the cheeck and if you turn the other one he'll slap that one as well, and if you turn to walk away he kicks you in the ass knocks you down and takes your wallet, and he will do this unto others as he has done unto you, until someone says enough. It would be nice if everyone was a good hearted person, but the reality is there are people like Bundy, Gacy, Dahmer, Osama, Manson, Hitler, and many others that the Scripture doesn't really address how to deal with to well.

Go and read the thread by DangerousDave26 titled "That Old Texas Joke".

Now that is a man whose hand I would like to shake. I agree completely with his actions.

I'm one of those that believes the media deserves a lot of blame for making us feel less safe today, by sensationalizing murder. If you look at real crime statistics, most of us are no more likely to be murdered today than we were 50 years ago. In a majority of cases murderer and victim knew each other prior, in fact they are often family members. Often the crime involves intoxication, where emotions, disputes, etc get out of control.

And this hits the issue square on the head. Nowadays we are subjected to news and headlines 24/7 repeated over and over again from TV Radio Internet etc which gives a false impression that we are descending into anarchy. Prior to the Information Age, we got our newspapers in the morning containing yesterdays news and the evening headlines at 6pm and that was just about it.
That said, it does appear that some people are operating on a hair trigger which can snap with the slightest provocation, and depraved acts seem in the ascendant.

Agreed - in my 23 years in LE we had numerous squad bay debates on this issue, whether more people were committing crimes or whether it was just a case of the same number being committed, but more of them being reported. Sometimes analysis of the annual FBI UCR would bear one side out, and sometimes the other. All I know is there is depravity in every human heart - examine your own conscience; are you proud of every single thing you've ever done? Watch how everyone listens to the minister on Sunday morning appealing to the "better angels" of our nature - and the sage nods and thoughtful looks around you - then watch the same folks cut each other off leaving the church parking lot just 20 minutes later. There's a thin veneer of civilization over that inner animal, but still, most of us control it pretty well with occasional innocuous aberrations. Some of us don't, however, and others are harmed because of their actions. It's just that some of us learn from our mistakes or catch them and don't repeat them before they become fatal for someone else. When others do something serious they need to be dealt with swiftly in accorrdance with the severity of their actions.

My OT reads "Thou shalt not murder." There is such a thing as sanctioned killing. If there weren't, the Israelites would never have been told by their Creator to utterly and completely eliminate certain tribes in their immediate vicinity. No one blames the old Israelite warriors for what they did, nor do I blame any soldier or police officer or ordinary citizen who takes a life under the proper circumstances. They do not need to feel condemned for doing so, but they do need support and understanding after the incident. There is an inbred resistance to killing in all human beings. That is why militaries have basic training, in order to overcome that resistance - and even then it's still not completely overcome. Read a really excellent book on the subject, called "On Killing." I can't remember the author's name, but he's a West Pointer and combat veteran who conducted an in-depth study of the human resistance to killing and how it is overcome by various cultures. You can extrapolate some of the data in this book to the criminal element as well. An absorbing read.

every single time people reference the old testament on this topic, or any of the other 613 dueterocanonical laws, they always conveniently forget 2 important points.

1) even for jews, those laws were changed. when's the last time you heard of a sanctuary city, or heard of jews still offering animal sacrifice.

2) christians are under a new covenant and the old jewish laws NEVER applied to gentiles EVER. how many christians do you see wearing a robe with pomegranites on the bottom border, and containing a blue thread as per o/t law? are we all going to hell for it? have you taken any of your disobedient children out of town and stoned them to death? that's in there too.

people love to forget that the entire reason for the o/t's inclusion in the bible is for historical reference to show Christ's coming was planned by God from the very beginning. remember this:
"the the new is in the old, contained, the old is in the new explained" maybe you folks read the book, but it don't sound to me like any of you actually studied what it meant.

I don't believe we have any more sociopaths per million now than in the Middle Ages.

What we do have is a much larger population, and much more media to bombard us with the bad news. And we all have more 'free' time to entertain ourselves with novels, news, movies and TV shows... most of which is centered on murder, or other capital crimes.

1000 years ago, a murder 20 miles away would not even be news... we would never hear about something so far away. Nor would we hear about atrocities occurring hours ago in Syria. But these things certainly did happen then as now.

I don't see much in the way of a solution. Isolating ourselves from the world is an old trick, but not a solution. Becoming more callous wouldn't be a solution either. Nor is reducing the population valid... the ratio of mayhem would remain the same... less total murder, but less total population... and how would the population be reduced, if not by murder itself?

Identification of sociopaths, and isolation of them is an idea. But then most of our politicians and CEOs would also be locked up.

Dick

You've got that right. Part of the definition of a sociopath is that other human beings are only objects to him/her - devoid of feelings or of any worth, they exist to fulfill that person's whims or needs only. Politicians and corporate management fit very nicely into that category.

Send them to China's prisons....there's no mercy for murderers there. They're dealt with in a shocking way. After execution their organs are taken and used for transplants.

i think that's turning a frown upside down :icon_lol:

as long as it doesn't become like that horror movie where the guy gets the murderer's hand and it goes off killing people.

Would that be like giving someone a hand when they ask for it?:icon_lol:

Or, would that qualify as giving everyone the "glad hand" wave?:icon_lol:
