Question for the FS public; High Resolution

Lionheart

SOH-CM-2014
Hey guys, (and gals),

Question. Do you think an aircraft package should come with high resolution textures, and then offer a downloadable installation of low resolution textures for older computers?

Or should one offer the low resolution package with the plane and have the high resolution as a optional download/installation?

I cannot have both in the package, as it is already at 280 megs.. (both FSX and FS9).

My thoughts are to have the high resolution textures in it as standard, and if people have an issue, they just download the low rez texture sets, click install, and its done..

The reason I bring this up. Some people will purchase a plane and never again look for updates, never check the Dev site to see about updates and patches, etc... (Makes me wish I had a button people could click and it phones home for updates and patches).

Any thoughts and feedback on this?

As a consumer, I would rather buy the package include the highest resolution textures that are available - I wouldn't mind d/l lower res textures if my computer couldn't handle the high res stuff. Might seem silly, but I would feel like I'm getting the best "bang for my buck" if I'm buying the high res textures.... just my two cents.

Highest res always. Users can easily reduce the sizes or you can offer that as a bonus, but best to start at high.

Actually I completely disagree.

I think the lower resolution textures should be sold with the package, that way nobody will have problems running the add-on. If you introduce high resolution as stock, you run greater risk of customers with older machines complaining about FPS and slow texture load times. This results in more of your time Bill, explaining to customers, who don't read the manuals, exactly where they can download the lower resolution textures.

Time costs money.

See! Its a difficult call, isnt it...

Bang for the buck compared to frame rate friendliness on older machines....

Maybe.... Maybe I can do it both ways....... I could have two models available, one high rez, one low rez.. and offer the texture packs for those that wish to change.

Hey All.

Lionheart are you saying "SOON....."?

Timberline?

Either res is fine with a note to d/l the other or it may be best to have two packages in case somebody doesn't read the fine print on high res and complains about framerates.

I agree with Nick in that I would rather have the low resolution textures as the primary textures nad the high resolution textures to use occasionally.

I guess I would prefer low res and a limited number of paint schemes on purchase. Keep the file size down for those with slower collections. Then, if you want to make more paint jobs and registration options for selected nationalities, and a higher res option, that's good, free or cheap of course. I already have a lot of airplanes with a lot more paint and load options than I will ever fly.

Hey All,

OUTSTANDING! Lionheart!

I'm still going around the world - right now sitting on Ascension Island gearing up for the flight to Africa. Need to get caught up on posting flights this weekend.

Hey Bill,

I'd prefer the high-res textures as standard with the option of low-res as an additional download. You might mention the low-res availability in the readme/manual so as to make the buyer aware that they are available in the advent of an issue using the high-res.

Thanks,
Odie

Two versions is a great idea. We tend to know the capabilities of our machines, and could thus download the version most likely to fit our needs. For instance, I know that I need lo-res for the epic for decent frame rates ... therefore, I know I should start with a low-res Kodiak.

I'm waiting patiently, as I have your 2004 Kodiak ported over to keep me going. Can't wait to see the new version.

I use rFactor (racing sim) and most developers offer their carsets with high res skins with low res skins available seperately for those with fps issues.

Read my lips Bill, HI-RES!

If people want lower resolution, they can get DXTBitmap or the MS Image Tool and format the textures at a lower quality. For me and for FS9 and FSX, I want the full Monty.

lolol....

Luckily I can read Cajun..

:d

I think its a tie.

I'll have a dual purchase system, and one will be 'High Rez Kodiak' and one will be 'Low Rez Kodiak'.

Cant believe I didnt think of that before..

This way, people will get the one they want 'right then'. No worries on downloading other versions..

Then when they get a faster system, they just download the high rez textures...
