Question of the Day (01-21-10)

Yep. During the time I was in the navy I visited there many times (1982 - 1991). Some were just port visits lasting a day or two, but twice I spent a month or so there. Mostly it was the Subic Bay area, but I've also visited Manila, and Angeles City, where Clark Air Force Base used to be. I have fond memories of my visits there. It's hot as heck, and the people were very friendly. One time our fleet of ships sailed from Subic Bay and went through the islands, across the Sibuyan Sea, to emerge from the San Bernadino Straight, of WW-II fame, into the Pacific. It was very cool. C9G's QOD reminded me of some of the astonishingly large creepy crawlies I've seen there!

I would immediately make my friend aware of the cockroach, either right there at the table or (if other guests were present) quickly pick up the salad bowl and politely ask him to join me in the kitchen. That way he could either retrieve the other guest's salads or at least make sure the rest of the dinner menu was roach-free. In any event I'd probably have to excuse myself from any further dining. ;)
In the Philippines, with open sewer canals and lotsa garbage, cockroaches are simply part of your life. I was stationed there for two years (Subic Bay) and there seems to be a time of year when all the cockroaches think they're Charles Lindbergh and try to fly, and they suck at it. Max gross-out to be relaxing in your living room and have one of the clumsy critters come sputtering across the room and hit your head or fall in your food or drink.

I'd race the cockroach to see who could finish the salad first!:icon_lol:

what would I really do?.......
Probably swap bowls with my wife when she wasn't looking and wait for all hell to break loose......:monkies::bump:

I don't eat salads, but I'd trade you mine for the roach.

LOL Henry! True C9G spoken like a true Arcadian, but he's English. It all taste alike with enough cayenne.

Cheezy, you do know what "sh!t on a shingle" is? Got it's name in the Navy back in WW II, HD can tell you all about the culinary that was supposed to be chipped beef on toast with gravy I bet.

THAT brings memories. Good old Jungle Survive, otherwise known as snake school. We were suppose to hide from the natives. Yeah, right! they knew the jungle like a NYC gang knows the Hood.

I heard about that Survival school in the "PI"... Didn't sound like fun!

Now, this Bear Grylls guy from that "Survivor Man" show (have you guys seen this show??) If he found a bug in his salad he would hold it up to the camera and say "umm, protien!", eat it, then rummage through his salad looking for more...

i wouldna ate it even if i didn't see any bugs. anything with a name like that is not for me. :icon_lol:

Heh, I don't remember seeing roaches in Subic, but again I was prolly too drunk to remember.

...or gittin' too much luvin'.

;)

Umm ... everyone's forgot the most important part ...

what flavor dressing is on the salad? :173go1:

It sure sounds like PRB has been there. Bugs can be big in that part of the world and are considered a gourmet specialty. Use your imagination and you'll get nauseous. I only spent the night there before flying a little further west where the bugs are still big.

Point it out to my friend and suggest hiring an exterminator. Or getting a neutron bomb.

If you were at a friend's house for a nice, lavish dinner and you found a dead cockroach in your salad, what would you do?

carry on eating, after all it's only a bit of protein...

i'm an outdoorsy type, i enjoy survival exercises and pushing myself to my limits... therefore what i know is edible WILL be eaten, i'd even pass a tip on the best way to cook an insect... boil it, seriously, it's not bad, if you have some rice add a few to that, quick easy survival exercise meal :icon_lol:

PRB, Ed 'Bear' Grylls is one of the few people i do have time for, after all he was Regiment, another guy i like for ideas is Ray Mears, combine the 2 completely different styles and you get a happy medium, of course i can't stress often enough if you want to try a survival ex make sure you know the area, it's risks etc... and seek help beforehand on what edible and whats not... remember the 7P's; Proper Planning & Preperation Prevents P*ss Poor Performance :salute:
