Questions about Overload...

SOH-CM-2013
I've been getting this nagging feeling that I have too many gauges loaded in my [Gauge] file.... No particular reason, just a gut feeling.

Now THAT leads me to this question -

Do we have a DEFINITIVE NUMBER for the maximum number of files that can exist in each of the following folders before instability results ?:

- Effects
- Gauges
- Info
- Objects DP
- Scene DB
- Scenery
- Ships
- Texture

and any other folders that I might have missed ?

Thanx :salute:

Not an expert, but......

SC, I have one install that I use for new planes.........try 'em out, put 'em through their paces, etc. I take the planes I don't like out, ones I'm not sure about into another folder inside the install, but don't touch the gauges. There's a whole whack of gauges in that folder, not to mention dp's and weapons in their respective folders.

I've not run into any problems with it at this stage. It's been slowly growing for about a year now and all's well.

I DO notice in some of my installs that they seem to take forever to load, but they run perfect! There's a lot to be said for multi-installs.

Perhaps the speed and size of one's OS has something to do with it.

Cheers!

SC,
I've never seen (or read here) any set of circumstances where CFS2 has crashed or become unstable due to large numbers of files in the folders you listed. As you accumulate more "stuff" in the sim it will take longer to load. And as you probably already know, a large number of aircraft (including multiple texture and model files in each aircraft) and ships can cause you to lose access to the Mission Builder. The crashes and weird behavior are usually caused by improper installation of an add-on aircraft or scenery item/package, or maybe it was installed correctly but it's flawed in some way. Misplaced, misnamed or missing files will cause a lot of grief, I've found that out the hard way. There are several "gauge cleaner" utilities that are CFS2-compatible and will scan your gauge folder for unused gauges and allow you to mass-delete the ones you don't need. Along the same lines I think I've seen a utility that allows you to do the same thing with extra ships that aren't used in missions.

I'm no expert either but I believe reading somewhere that the 100 plane limit (I never go higher than 90) is caused by the MB plane list rather than the game itself? So conceivably any other list that can be popped open on MB could also be affected - like the ship list for example.

I know this happened to me once and ! only had 85 planes in the game..........and I swear I had too many ships in there, not to mention infrastructure!

There is a utility floating around somewhere that will check thru your gauges folder and allow you to dump or back up all gauges not being used.

Googling on it..... found it over at Simviation.

Here it is: GaugeWipe2002. Just scroll down the page a little bit.

No need to have CFS2 load up a few hundred unused gauges every time it starts.

I don't know any absolutes
CFS2 in builder mode is less stable than player mode , I guess it needs more RAM. Its down to the abilities of your operating system; on Win98 even a mission file could be too big to load in MB.

The 100 plane limit seems aproximate so I guess there is some connection with the number of other things.
Is it ConFiG files or DamageProfile files? I don't know
Both ships and planes have cfg files
Some have reported no limit to ships
others report MB crapping out at 90 planes,

the more DPs in Objects_DP the longer CFS2 takes to load, so it must read or scan for DP s at load time,

Info refers to DPs,

gauges and scenery are only loaded at "fly now" time, so I guess there is no limit to how much you have

Interesting. Yes I think mb is the problem rather than the actual game.

I don't have problems with plane limit cos I only load planes with good quality virtual cockpits - that comes of getting used to consistent cockpits in il-2 I guess.

With my several installs the "100" plane limit is a moving target. Some installs my MB crashes at 90, some it waits until 92, some 88. Not sure why it continues to move on me. I would agree with our brothers above, MB is more unstable than missions and campaigns flying when it comes to size and numbers of files.
