Questions about the letter "F"

Bare with me here.

I ask this here because I know a lot of folks are military and ex military.

The question is this I think I know why but just can't put it together.
The letter "F" like in F-15,F-22 and so on means fighter. "B" means bomber .But on a plane like the F-117 what is it it? Its not a fighter its a bomber.

As always thanks

Might be to make pilots feel better, or maybe the funding thing...

I think in some cases it might have to do with the planes' size.

A couple 'F's that come to mind that were designed to be bombers are the F-105 and F-111, both planes that may have had a limited 'fighter' capability, but were intended to be used primarily as bombers.

There are probably others?

If they were fighter-bombers and were given the designation FB, would they end up on FaceBook ...?
