Questions re LOD mesh

There are two sets of LOD mesh in the downloads library here - LOD8 CFS2 Mesh (4 to 22, I don't see 1 to 3) and World LOD 1 to 18. Both by Rhumbaflappy. Some questions:

1. Which one should be used?
2. By "mesh", does this mean mountains, lakes, etc.
3. Can you select specific geographic areas to cover (so that you can avoid installing mesh over areas that are not used?
4. Does the mesh overwrite existing mesh (e.g. SRTM mesh from Simviation)?

1. They can both be used at the same time.... LOD8 is higher resolution... rest is still better than stock.

2. Mesh means mountains... Lakes water etc is controlled by something else (LWM ie Maskrider techniques)

3. Yes although I am not sure of how Rhumba has classified his mesh in the world.

4. Mesh will not overwrite the files per say... the higher resolution files will always show up over less resolution mesh if all files are in the same folder and same level in Scenery Library.

.....

Hi wsmwsm

In first delete all the lod 9 mesh that you've already installed from Simviation...they are... how i could say.... I don't find the exact word ....:barf: .....I don't know how they can purpose these outdated mesh, surely the worst in the ...world.
if you install the news they will not overwrite the bad and these previous will add fps and they could perturb your sceneries...
install the Rhumba's dem4km,lod5, lod 7 and dem 8 there are better than the default stock, you will have a good mesh base and you could later add some better lod9 mesh for some specific areas.
Install them as a scenery, out or in the game folder, set them in the library, place them in the bttom at the end of the list upper the terrain .
there was some zip at SOH corrumpted ,there is another links somewhere to get them ok ....

Wsmwsm,

I'm up with my kids right now, but the best way to describe it is to think of it as a "layer-cake." I'll get into more detail tomorrow, I'm just too tired to think straight at the moment.

Thanks for the input. But I'm still a bit uncertain. Is LOD 8 or World LOD the way to go and can I choose specific geographic areas to cover?

The SRTM mesh employed now covers Japan and parts of China and Asia. Japan (jtmsl 1-3) looks fine, but the other areas, including what should be mountainous areas in Korea and Manchuria, look like Kansas. When I had a Euro install, there was no definitive improvement over the generic mesh.
