RAF Middle Wallop

Didn't quite escape.
Before anyone asks, Over Wallop is on one side and Nether Wallop on the other.

Anyway. I said I'd do a BoB airfield for someone (read: Lewis) when the A2A Accu-Sim Spit was released. The original plan was to do RAF Hornchurch, but that was stymied by a lack of building information, including the words "Hangars: Civilian x2", so I went back and did some work on one I had started a while ago, then forgot about it until the Spit was released.

I've struggled to move for the last couple of days, let alone sit in front of a computer testing for hours, so apologies for any remaining errors as the testing and uploading of this was done in about an hour and I'm now off to get more painkillers. Here it is, anyway: RAF Middle Wallop.

The station was an inter-war expansion field, intended as a bomber station but ending up in 11, then 10 Group Fighter Command. Apart from a brief occupation by the USAAF 9th Air Force, Middle Wallop remained in Fighter Command throughout the war. Post War it was borrowed by the Fleet Air Arm, then returned to the RAF before they gave it to the Army Air Corps, who have been there ever since.

Aircraft types based at Middle Wallop were primarily Spitfires and Hurricanes, with Blenheims, Lysanders, Bostons and an apparently random collection of other stuff visiting alongside them. These days, you can use it for test flying your Westland WAH-64 if you want to, although the layout is a tiny bit different in the modern world and there aren't any fighter pens left.

RAF Honchurch would still be nice though if you can get more info. I would have thought such a pivotal airfield in the BoB would have tons of info and pictures. Anyway, thanks again. :salute: :wavey:

Unfortunately, as with all freeware developers, producing one doesn't pay for the research materials for the next, so I can only go by what I can easily get. There's absolutely nothing useful that I can find which shows me anything more than an overhead shot of the hangar row at Hornchurch, so unless I completely make something up off the top of my head, I'm completely stymied.

Replying to your own post. Bad habit. I shall consider my wrist virtually slapped.

Anyway, someone over at the A2A forums has reported a flatten file issue with Middle Wallop. This happens sometimes when you overwrite a default airfield, so I have uploaded an ADE "altitude change" file that should fix the issue if anyone hits it:

Edited to add: the file needs to go in [FSX]\scenery\world\scenery

Thanks Ian, that will definitely help me. the airfield take-off area was about 20 feet below the parking areas,:icon_eek: so when i tried to come down, I bent my prop.
 
Well that's positioned two more fighter pens for me, thanks. ;)

Unfortunately it only shows the three military standard hangars (C types, if memory serves), not the civvy ones. :(

I'v been flying all over GB with your airbases.

I start from my home base RAF Friston and Newhaven Habour.

A WWII RAF base between the towns of Seaford and Eastdean in the county of East Sussex, England.

Do you have any or know of any WWII German Airbases?

I would like to pay then a visit with my new Spitfire.

With a bomb attached to the flight of course. :)

This is possibly the one time in history when I will ever say that Bill Womack's fighter pens are just placeholders until I replace them with my own "E" pens. Obviously there's still massive amounts to do yet, that's just a start, but I need to give my back a break for a few hours before even thinking about touching ADE again.

If anyone wants a rough version, just to start with, I'll zip that up and upload it later. The visible grass runways are only temporary as well and can be easily disposed of as soon as I have placed the black taxiways down the middle, which I haven't yet.

I use my own version of Friston as my home base most of the time, but have yet to visit it in the Accu-Sim Spit. All my flight hours in that so far (about two of them?) have been checking out Middle Wallop or Hornchurch. :rolleyes:

Quick question. In accordance with your readme for Middle Wallop you want us to download Bill Womack's "RAF WWII Airfield bldgs". I cannot find it anywhere. Is this necessary now?

Thanks Ian, I cant wait. If that is what you call a "rough" version then I am not sure how you could improve the site except for adding a couple more buildings :salute: :)
 
And here's what Hornchurch looks like this evening. :)

I'm undecided about what to do with the runway extensions over the peri track for the No.2 and No.3 runways (12/30 and 10/24 on period plans). They weren't there in the Battle of Britain, which is when I'm sort of aiming this at, but then I'm not sure how much of the extension beyond runway No.1 (02/20) was there either and I've included all of that. It *looks* like it is there on the early war overhead photo I have in a book, but it's kinda blurred and hard to tell.

I'm tempted to leave it like this. Anyone else got any suggestions or comments?

There are two things left to do - I need to build concrete pads under the two remaining (and accurately shaped) Bill Womack fighter pens and I need to place parking spots everywhere. After that, it's pretty much ready to go, but I'm not in a position to do it this evening. I'll come back to it tomorrow if my back allows or some time next week if not.

Whatever the heck "Hangars: Civilian x2" is meant to be, they're not there on any of the information posted above, so they ain't going on!

Edited to add: Hmm. I'd better upload Bill's [LINESTRIKE]billdings[/LINESTRIKE] buildings and give them their own page. It appears I haven't done it yet. In the meantime, as scottmm73 already noted, they're included in the Digby or Hixon sceneries. They're in one of the USAAF ones as well, but I can't remember which!
