Rami new project thread...

For Shessi...baptism by fire!

Mark,

I just wanted to let you know that the Manchester has received its Rami baptism by fire...a raid by Bomber Command on 18 December, 1941 on the KMS Gnisenau and KMS Scharnhorst while anchored at Brest.

Great work on the airfile...she's nice and stable in level flight...useful for 'dem bomber formations.

Sterlings and Halifaxes are also part of the formation. The Spitfire escort is fictional.

And, it looks like I need some prop textures for the Manc.

Here is a link about one flightcrew, including my relation, Philip Derek Hemmens.

Although he survived the crash and taken P.O.W, he was later to die on the 18th October 1944 at the Buchenwald concentration camp. They handed the survivors over to the SS instead of the Luftwaffe, so they were denied medical help, by the time the Luftwaffe arrrived to collect them, it was too late for my relation.

Mark,

Here's the skinny...

"title_string"=Hornchurch Squadron - Daylight assault on Brest
"summary_string"=Listen up! RAF bombers are heading back to Brest today, and we have rigged your Spitfire up with a thirty-gallon slipper tank to get you there & back. Manchesters, Halifaxes, and Sterlings will pummel the two German vessels and your task is to provide protection. Make sure that these Manchesters get back in one piece! (This mission deviates from the historical records because the actual mission was unescorted)
"objective_string"=18 December, 1941 saw RAF Bomber Command send bombers over the drydocks & anchorages at Brest, France. The Gnisenau and Scharnhorst were there from 22 March 1941 to 11 February, 1942. During this period, the British allotted approximately ten percent of their total force against these vessels. While they were damaged several times, they were never destroyed. However, the end result was that they were both eventually withdrawn to the Baltic. The departure from Brest became known in history as the "Channel Dash."
"intelligence_string"=Following your departure from Hornchurch, you will head west over England toward Lundy Island, just off of Cornwall. Once you meet up with these bombers, proceed south toward Brest. You will be responsible for the Manchesters during the flight. Over Brittany, watch out for German planes trying to intercept you, and intense flak over the target. This target is one of the most heavily defended in Europe, so be ready for anything!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vb
"airfield_string"=England - Hornchurch

Rami,

I'm afraid you'll need to swap out the "Hallybag" for an earlier model - the BIII didn't appear until '43.:smiley_simmons:

UncleTgt,

Very true, but there is not a Merlin-engined multi-lod Halifax available, and Stuart Green's model is getting increasingly crusty.

Rami,

... and if Shessi stopped messing around with German a/c & got back to his Coastal Command a/c, then maybe we would have!!:a1089::rugby:

UncleTgt,

Hey, the Kondor is fantastic! I WOULD like a Hampden and Whitney, though...

UncleTgt,

I stand corrected. :jawdrop: Stiz DID do a multi-lod merlin-engined Halifax. It needs a little work, and some paint, but...

Rami,

Just went looking & came across the Stiz version (& AF SCrub update) at Simviation.

Would still be nice to have an early Hallbag with the nose turret & smaller fins tho...

UncleTgt,

The best thing about the Stiz version is that it is literally a "blank canvas."

UncleTgt,

This really caught me by surprise. I had completely forgotten about Stiz's model, and didn't realize that A.F. Scrub's updated model was also multi-lod. She needs some tweaking, especially with the .dp file, but otherwise it is a wonderful aircraft.

Have you, or can you do any repaints for this model?

Good morning,

Still tweaking, but at least now we're approaching historical accuracy.

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Aircraft - British

Description: CFS2,FS2000, FS8 and FS9 Halifax B.MkII S1A Bomber
==================================================
The Handley Page Halifax was one of the front-line, four-engine heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force during World War II. A contemporary of the famous Avro Lancaster, the Halifax remained in service until the end of the war, performing a variety of duties in addition to bombing.

The Halifax entered service with No. 35 Squadron RAF at Linton on Ouse in November 1940 and its first operational raid was against Le Havre on the night of March 11-12, 1941.

Introduction of 1,390 hp Merlin XX engines and a twin .303-in dorsal turret instead of waist guns resulted in the Mk II Series 1 Halifax.

The Mk 1 Series 1 (Special) achieved improved performance by removing the nose and dorsal turrets. The Mk II Series IA had a molded Perspex nose (the standard for future Halifax variants), a four-gun Defiant-type dorsal turret, Merlin 22 engines and larger tail surfaces which solved control deficiencies in the early Marks. A total of 1,966 Mk IT and 915 Mk V Halifaxes were built.

The model
=========
Tx to Stiz for a nice Beta model.

The exhaust effects are automatic.

Bomb doors are opened/closed by the spoiler key in CFS2.

Every engine can be started/stopped from the cockpit or by the keys.

Prop pitch and mixture can be used for any engine or separately.

Rami, I'll take a look at it, however it'll be number three in a queue though. Any particular squadron in mind, or is it just AI-candy?:boxing:

SPMan: Lancasters were originally fitted with FN64 ventral turrets. Most of those used on the Augsburg Raid had them. The aiming periscope was a nightmare and they were removed because of this and the drag they caused. Some of the MkIIs with the bulged bomb-bay had them refitted.

The continued use of the .303 machine-gun can be laid squarely at the door of certain technical cretins within the Air Ministry. Harris tried his hardest to get workable .5 Browning armed turrets into Lancasters.

The RAF could've had cannon fighters as standard by 1940.....

Hey, hey...UT calm down, calm down....like...:biggrin-new:

Rami,
Thanks for that, Ted's Manc is good looking, shame about the Vultures though. Important ac though, as it was one of the first true 'modern' heavies.

Now folks, been working on a port over form CFS3 for a few months, as UT says one which is sorely missed in CFS2 and FS9, an early Halibag. So here's a BII, and a GRII, that are coming along. Took the basic frame, made new engines, still lots to do. As it's a high poly model, adding a lot of LODs will be important. The great thing is that it can easily be made into a BI, a BII Series Ia, and Series Ia Special.

UT, this'll whet your appetite, like you, CC and the North Atlantic campaign is close to my heart, here's loads of other CC stuff I've been working on (and of course the CC Liberators). As it's summer, I'll get back into them in the autumn. So, instead of slapping paint on stuff in the warmth of the Pacific, you'll be able to do a proper job on some weather beaten, force 9 gale CC aircraft!:tongue:

Rami, you'll be getting your Whitley's. I took Ted's Whitley, which strangely he didn't put bomb bay doors on any of his Whitley models, and put correct bomb bay doors and bomb bay inside. At first I thought that the Alphasim Whitley had the correct bay door layout, but no that's wrong, the correct set-up is a two part bay. I'll take off the aerials and it'll be a MkV.

Cheers

Shessi

Shessi,

That's awesome! :wavey: Now, if I can just get Jamie to finish the Hampden, my turn to the dark side will be complete. :devilish:

Hi Rami,

On the subject of lack of representation of the RCAF and the RNZAF (in the other thread), perhaps a mission or two about the Dallachy Strike Wing might be in order. This wing comprised of RAF, RAAF, RCAF and RNZAF Beaufighter squadrons operating from Scotland against shipping along the coast and in the fjords of Norway.
