"Re-calibrating" Saitek X52?

I've had a Saitek X52 (not Pro) joystick/throttle for some time. Two questions.

I've never found a way to calibrate it. I can get to a "test" window, but "settings" or "calibration" options are unavailable. Can it be re-calibrated?

My joystick seems to work fine in the sense that the buttons work and the axis seem to line up. But for some reason now, the stick seem a bit "loose", so to speak, and it takes slightly more movement of the stick to accomplish the same things. Is this normal and can it be made more responsive?

Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in? The early X52 had a calibration feature but the later X52 auto-calibrates (they changed the on-board chipset) and cycling the plug usually forces it into an auto-calibrate routine. You don't get any screens or any indication that it is doing it, it just goes on in the background.
 
Aha. I do routinely unplug it. I always wondered why there was a kind of a "blip" and a sound when I plugged it back in.
 
Another method to force calibration is once you are in-game and on the ground cycle all the axes to their full extents a couple of times. In other words make a couple of full travel circles with the joystick, move the throttle fully open/closed a couple of times and don't forget to cycle the rotary axes (D and E) and the slider axis too. This teaches the software where the physical limits are and it can then calibrate accordingly.
