RE: Cutting-edge US Navy warship being built in Maine

As an old Destroyer Sailor I have to say that is one UGLY ship! I'll take my Bath Ironworks built DLG-14 any day! :)

Yes, I know all about stealth and reducing radar cross-section and all, but that is one dreadfully ugly warship. The Spruance-class DD's were much better looking.

The low-to-the-water warship will feature a wave-piercing hull, composite deckhouse, electric drive propulsion, advanced sonar, missiles, and powerful guns that fire rocket-propelled warheads as far as 100 miles. It's also longer and heavier than existing destroyers -- but will have half the crew because of automated systems.

As an old fleet sailor, I see trouble with damage control crews and fires. The Navy learned a hard lesson years ago about warships and aluminum structures on them courtesy of an air launched Iraqi Exocet. I don't see composites as being as sturdy in battle as aluminum. But I guess the new guys weren't around back to have learned that lesson, so they reinvented a square wheel. Also when you've taken on damage and the ship is on fire, you need every hand you can get to save the ship. O' course these are the same people who think blue camouflage uniforms are cool too. Until you fall overboard and they can't spot you.

Well, at least it will be a low-poly-count model for sims! ;)

But, more seriously, the U.S.N. has stolen the blueprints of the British Admiralty in their vault. Here is the proof;
