...As most of us know,....Pappy Boyington is one of the more noted war ace heroes of WWII. I picked this link up from the latest issue of "America in WWII." The DVD is titled "Pappy Boyington Field" and sells for $19.99. [65 minutes long] Apparently it ties in the controversy that swirls about the man's character and having an airport named after him in his home state of Idaho. I don't have a clue if it's a fund raiser type of DVD or not.
If you do go to the sight,...be sure to click "The Film" button on top to read the various reviews. Quite interesting.

As a lot of folks already know, Pappy is my favorite WWII pilot.........it's where my name comes from!!

They prolly don't want to name it after him because he was a drunk and a trouble maker, doesn't matter about the honors he recieved or that he fought for our country or that he was the leading Marine ace in WWII.

I've read everything I could find about him, and according to most of his own squadron, he WAS a drunk and a bit of a trouble maker........on the ground...................but get him in the air and it was a whole new park.

I don't see the problem with it

We all have our demons, his just happened to be a bottle.

Just my opinion of course.
 
I'm glad they were successful in getting the airport named for Pappy. Our heroes are not always attractive people with movie star good looks and gentlemanly manners. Many of them are hard cases from tough neighborhoods or dysfunctional families but they step up when things get rough. Their human weaknesses off-duty should not lessen the significance of their actions in combat.
 
he was a hero in my eyes ( is? has he passed or not?) but i met him years ago at an airshow in my town..Bud anderson,chuck yeager live here and they brought in Boyington and a man from san fransico who was a tuskeegee airman..a col..if i remember correctly....the three of them made it just fine to the early morning call for the pancake feed...but boyinton showed up drunk at 9 am and continued to drink all morning and was escorted off the property by noon..it was really sad
 
Wow - that is sad. Pappy passed away in 1988. The alcohol probably shortened his life considerably. But alcoholism is a disease - not a character flaw. It takes nothing away from what he accomplished in WWII.
 
Lt. Col. Boyington had his problems, but he was a great leader and an incredible combat pilot. He deserves to be remembered and honored.

Believe Pappy was a bird colonel when he retired. How many, drunk or sober, were awarded the CMH and the Navy Cross?
