RE: Photos collection focusing on the PTO

My Father had this huge book of WW-II photos for years. It was about 14 x 20 inches and had many of these photos in it. I remember paging through that book for hours staring at those photos. #17 has always been very interesting to me. It's Yorktown at Midway, just before her unfortunate demise. Notice how shiny the flight deck is. It looks almost polished. Of course it could be wet for fire fighting, but it doesn't look wet. It just looks smooth and well taken care of, and that would make sense since it was a pre-war built ship... Today we see these ships not as they were, but as they are today, falling apart and rusting. Even some of the museum ships are not nearly as well cared for as they were when they were in service.
 
It's always been Navy tradition to ensure that ships are properly maintained whenever possible. Clean it, paint it, lube it, cover it with canvas, whatever it takes. Constant combat or at-sea time often interrupts the normal routine of maintenance and preservation. That's why in wartime you see a lot of ships with running rust on the hulls, and flight deck markings worn away.
