RE: Photos of NASCAR owner Jack Roush jet crash

Oops. From the looks of his bloody face, I'd say he didn't have his shoulder harness's on. The inertial reel on the harness would have held him back from a face strike. Not wearing them during Ldg & TO is a violation of FAR's. But no matter, it probably will be one of the lesser one's he gets.

I guess it speaks to the strength of modern composite designs. No fire, the cabin remained largely intact around the seating area.
 
I don't mean to be hypercritical, but gear down, flaps down, 45 degree banking turn and how much AGL? I wasn't there, I don't know all the details, but to me it looks like a badly botched approach. I am glad he walked away and that has nothing to do with me being a life-long fan of Ford.
 
Ohh Man,that is scary!!!! Really lucky this wasn't much worse for the pilot or people on the ground.

Clearly the problem was caused by Roush attempting to make a right turn.:icon_lol:

According to people who had seen him arrive in previous years, the crash was basically inevitable, since Roush usually made steeply banked approaches that were incredibly close to running a wingtip into the ground.

From what I've read, this crash was the result of a badly botched go-around.

Since this is the second airplane he's crashed in the last 8 years (he flew the last one into a power line), I wouldn't be surprised if the FAA suspends or revokes his pilot certificate over this.
 
Certainly doesn't look good! If you had merely shown me the very first photo you posted and asked me what happened to all onboard, I would have felt confident saying they all died! That was an ugly aircraft attitude that close to the ground!

However, despite all the photos, I don't think we have enough of a picture to form conclusions.

I think we should merely express thanks they survived this crash and wait for the investigation results to see what happened.

I am really glad they survived. Thank you Lord.. It would have been horrible if it was catastrophic.

From what they were saying, the plane began rocking back and fourth on final and then winged over. One person said it looked like it was stalling and power was being applied, but perhaps just a bit too late.
 
Didn't he have a minor mishap in his P-51 a few years ago? Although Carl Edwards (NASCAR driver) who is also a pilot swears Jack is an excellent pilot and he flies with him frequently.
 
In defense of Jack and his open forehead. Everyone thinks he didnt have his seat belt on. Perhaps he didnt, but how about this. The aircraft stalled out to the side, impacting sideways on the left side. Now, a seat harness is great when you impact straight on, but in his case, he hits sideways and the left window framework would be close to the side of his head, and if he was looking out the window at the ground rushing up and hit, then that surely could cause a forehead injury.

I wouldnt be so quick to judge what happened and if he is a bad pilot. There may have been circumstances that quickly occurred that he just couldnt control. How about that B2 flying wing crash? Goofy, bad pilots or a mechanical mishap?


Just my thoughts. Might want to wait till all the investigating is carried out. Might 'save face'.

I guess anything is possible, but the shoulder harness system in jets is designed for side-loading, also...for accidents just like Roush's. Both straps come out of the top center of the seat, and you have to spread them to go on either side of your neck. If the side-loading of the impact was hard enough to slam the frontal portion of his face into the side of the cockpit, he most likely would have a broken neck or crushed larnyx, and not just a bloody nose. But, something could have dislodged in the cockpit and hit him in the face. You're right, we should refrain from judging.
