RE: Photos of NASCAR owner Jack Roush jet crash

Gosh, he was lucky. Can't say the same for the aircraft. Looks like a parts bird now.

Maybe he flies FSX too much. It is a good thing I don't fly for real anymore. I noticed that I "salvage" a lot of approaches, I would have gone around on in real life flying. Not a good habit to get into.

Panther Award

"Introducing the Panther Award"

Those of you who have been around the Sim-Outhouse for some time will remember that the word “Panther” became a verb around here, as in “I Panthered again”. It means to “crash in spectacular fashion”, and was named after our esteemed administrator of the same name, because he did it so often, and posted great screen shots to prove it. In that spirit, we will hold a contest for the best “Panther!” Post pictures and write ups of your most creative/stupid crashes. The write up creativity will be a factor in determining the winner! At the end of the year the SOH Staff will nominate candidates for the award. The winners will get a prize, which is still TBA.

Should there be any doubt as to whether we have a winner or not?

Yes, but he will need to become a member of SOH to collect. :)

I think we should qualify the eligibility rules for the SOH Panther award as it was clearly limited to virtual flying!

Although, I cannot recall Ed doing anything that scary looking in FSX!

The pictures do show how strong the Beech Premier's composite airframe is. A CJ1 would probably have been a crumpled ball of burning aluminum in a similar crash.

I read something on the day it happened. It looked like (to witnesses) that he stalled the aircraft and then recovered at very low altitude and then had a secondary stall at about 50 feet agl leading to the impact.

I would guess that it was a side impact causing the injuries. The Premier's cockpit is very tight. the side window is less than 6 inches from your head ( I would estimate. I never sat in one but I have been up close). I know it's about 10 or 11 inches in a Citation Excel. And that's a much larger plane.

I know that from cleaning them and sitting in the pilots seat. About the same in a King Air too. Just the distance from the side of your head to your shoulder. No where near the headroom of a Challenger (We had one of those too) or a CRJ. I can't even get into the pilots seat in a CJ1 and that's a similar size to the Beech.

My $0.03 (Adjusted for inflation)

Didn't he have a minor mishap in his P-51 a few years ago? Although Carl Edwards (NASCAR driver) who is also a pilot swears Jack is an excellent pilot and he flies with him frequently.

Dang, tough crowd here! The accident a few years ago was not with his P-51, but with some sort of experimental light plane. He hit power lines and dumped it in a lake. The only reason he is alive today is a retired Marine saw the accident and jumped in the lake and got him out of the plane and to the surface.

None of us knows what happened, obviously. Glad everyone on board is going to live.

Yes, but he will need to become a member of SOH to collect. :)

Make him an Honorary Charter Member and give him some Donationware planes to satusfy his urge to fly.

In return? How about a SOH logo on one of his race cars?

The old timers around here know that to qualify as a "panther", there must be a lot of smoke and flames and a crash is mandatory.

Yeah, I tried to qualify for a Panther award based on a hard landing with subsequent gear collapse. I was turned down. :173go1:
