T-45C Goshawk realistic HUD and awesome video :)

Hi guys, after I released the new Realistic HUD for the F/A-18 a week ago, a lot of people requested to make it available for Dino Cattaneo's T-45C Goshawk. So this is done now, the HUD fits the T-45C perfectly :icon_lol:

I am waiting for Dino's permission to include the modified T-45 panel and aircraft config files in the HUD install package, and I'll post the download link here as soon as I get it!

Meanwhile you can check out the demo video I made featuring the Goshawk with the new HUD, which includes some formation flying and carrier landing near San Francisco:

Here are are a couple of screenshots from the vid :)

That is a nice video. One question, however. Does the T-45 land without flaps as shown in the video? It would seem to me that you would want to use flaps on landing?

The correct thing of course is to land with full flaps, but I did not use flaps at all in the video. The reason is that Dino's T-45C reaches it's optimum approach angle of attack (about 8 degrees or the velocity vector centered in the E-bracket) at a very low speed of about 105 kts with full flaps. The real T-45C landing speed (with full flaps) however is about 120 kts. So I wanted to land at the optimum approach angle of attack AND at the real T-45C landing speed of 120 kts. I found that this could be achieved with flaps UP (no flpas) and speed brake ON. It also helps to land at a higher speed if you land at max fuel.

This is a screenshot from the video. You can see that the aircraft is at the optimum AOA (yellow donut on the indexer and velocity vector in the center of the E-bracket) at 119 kts:

Mr. J. R. "neutrino,"

Thanks again for the fine work you've done to this...
The only thing I found missing in your Aircraft.cfg is the correct TAILHOOK settings for Mr. Dino's model.
You can find the settings here: Aircraft AI Carrier Configurations v1.9 by James F. Chams

==================================================

T-45C Goshawk v1.85
---------------------

Modify this "Aircraft.Cfg" File with the statements below:

...\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\Boeing_T45C\Aircraft.Cfg

// Modified by James F. Chams @2009.
// ===========================

[tailHook]
tailhook_length=2.5
tailhook_position=-15.6, 0.0, -2.63 // -18.6, 0.0, -2.63 // Modified to align correctly with the Tailhook
cable_force_adjust=1.5

Launch Assist in coded into the model's (.mdl) file and is therefore NOT needed here.

Thanks again! :wavey:

Would someone please post a how to or a small video showing how to correctly use the TACAN, I'm using the ILS but can't quite get the tacan to work I read the read me but I'm still stuck a little!

Thank you mr JamesChams for the correct tailhook settings!

Perhaps this screeny can help. Since this is a T-45C Goshawk thread the screeny shows the Goshawk turning towards the carrier. Speed is high but that will be reduced quickly enough. Since you state you have ILS I will guess you have tuned NAV 1 to 112.00 on the radio stack popup panel.

Bring up the HUD Switches popup panel. At the top right in orange mark put there by me you see ILS and CAGE is on.

In red you'll see a 4-way switch set to NAV 1. When this is done the arrow appears which indicates the direction the carrier is moving towards. The arrow is outlined in yellow on the HUD. Marked in purple on the hUD Switch popup panel is a NAV 1 heading for the boat but basically it matches the arrow.

In blue on the HUD is a TACAN heading bug. In red on the HUD is the TACAN distance to the boat.

J.R. can probably explain more about it but this may help.:guinness::guinness:

Yes i'm using NAV 1 ILS, Its the actual inputting of the tacan data I'm stuck on, using the hud I'm selecting tacan then entering 57 but how do I put in the X, then do I hit enter, on the hud panel to get it to appear! Its just the entering and getting the tacan to work that I'm stuck on, if you or someone could just simply explain the procedures I need to follow I'd be very grateful! Many thanks for your screen at least I know now what I should be looking for! Thanks Willy!

Hi, in the Goshawk, you can enter the frequency by opening up the Cessna Radio Stack panel (Shift+2) - then place your mouse pointer over the button in the red circle and use the mouse wheel to select the frequency (112 MHz in the screenshot).

In the Hornet, you can enter the frequency by pressing either the TCN or ILS button on the Up Front Control (UFC) panel, then press 5-7-X or 1-1-2-0-0-ENT. The 'X' symbol is entered from the button in the red circle and the 'ENT' symbol is on the UFC keypad. The shortest sequence would be to press TCN-5-7-X for the Nimitz or TCN-4-7-X for the default carrier. Note, that the ILS needles appear only when you are within +/-35 degrees from centerline!

Thats what I needed to know for the hornet thanks so much neutrino mate!

Now how to I get the Tacan for the hawk to work?

Setting either TACAN or NAV 1 enables both. In the Goshawk setting NAV 1 is easiest. With the correct NAV 1 frequency TACAN is also working. The correct NAV 1 frequency depends on whether you have an Accel default carrier or Javier's Nimitz freeware as stated in the readme.

Yes, I forgot to mention that the frequency for ILS and TACAN is the same. So once you have tuned the NAV1 radio to the correct carrier frequency, you can get both ILS and TACAN data. In order to see the TACAN steering arrow you need to put the 4-way steering switch on the HUD panel to NAV1 as described by wily here. If you put the switch to NAV2 or GPS, the steering arrow will show the data from the NAV2 radio (if there is a valid VOR at that frequency) or the GPS (if there is a GPS waypoint flight plan).

I'm having problems I've followed your instructions to the letter but this is what I see on my hood!

My Tacan just won't work for some reason!

Its saying NKW not TCN and pointing me back to the original airfield I came from, strange?

Its the same for the Hawk, it flashes up TCN then goes straight back to NKW what can be causing this!

Peter, I see what happens. When there is a VOR station at any of the carrier frequencies - 111 MHz or 112 MHz, it overrides the TACAN signal coming from a carrier. You have chosen the Diego Garcia airport, which happens to have a VOR at 112 MHz :icon_lol: So you are receiving signal from the VOR (its ID is NKW).

So if you really want to use that airport (I have to admit it's really nice - in the middle of the Indian Ocean), you can place a default carrier there (and use the 111 MHz frequency) rather than the Nimitz carrier. Diego Garcia is probably one of the very few sea based airports that have VORs operating at 111 or 112 MHz, so you will not have such problem at other airports and you can use the Nimitz carrier there.
