RealityXP database

Based on their website the RealityXP Garmin 430 and 530 packages use the Garmin trainer as a back end. Does this mean the database used for procedures comes from the trainer? In particular this is a very old database which does not have new VOR's and has incorrect old ones. I already have the trainer, because my plane has a GNS430W. I am looking to get the RealityXP package for IFR practice at home.

The entire package is nothing more than an interface to the Garmin Trainer program, so yes the database is limited to whatever the Garmin Trainer supplies. There has been precisely one update to the trainer's database over the past decade, so I sure wouldn't hold my breath waiting for another one... :icon_eek:

Thanks for the information. I may still pick up the package as it is good practice of the process even if the database is old. Now if only I could use my Jeppesen database subscription for both. Yes, this is extremely wishful thinking.

...They are ABSOLUTELY worth the $$$! I have the 530WAAS, 430WAAS, and the unlimited pack. I hardly fly an aircraft that doesn't have them I used the instructions in the RXP forum to update my database to the 2011 dataset, which is the most current one offered. It isn't perfect, but much better than the database the product comes with. I hope that one day the developer will maybe find a way to implement database updates, or that another solution is found (i.e., another garmin release that will allow an update)....But I am really happy with them and can't fly without them for my style of flying

Well, that's the rub. Jean-Luc is only piggy-backing off the Garmin Trainer package. Garmin themselves control their Trainer package, and are the only ones who can provide any updates for the database.

I'm pretty sure you can. I can't find the link at the moment but there's a card reader or something you buy, then pull a few files off of that for the PC trainer. I'll look for the link.

This isn't the link but it's the best I could find for now... what you need is the Skybound Card Reader from Jeppessen

I'm not positive but the product might be newer and called the Skybound G2 USB Adapter

The file you really care about is titled worldwide.bin
There is another terrain obstacles file but I don't know what the filename is. Basically I've interpolated this info from the Aug 2011 RXP forum post.

Ryan is correct. The two files require re-naming IIRC, and they can then be used to update the database. The adaptor cable thingy is on the Jeppesen website
