Really lost (adding objects, GSL, etc)

SgtT

SOH-CM-2024
I've been reading through the threads and have been able to add some nice scenery to CFS2 (thanks for the help). I keep reading about GSL files and objects that need to be added for both some of the scenery files and GSL files.

Now I'm totaly lost. Could someone point me in the right direction where I can:

a. Find an explanation about the GSL files.
b. What objects I should install for a Pacific installation of CFS2.
c. Anything else you all can think of that would be useful.

I'm really interested to have a CFS2 Pacific install with the best scenery, GSL files and objects. Sorry if I'm being a pain.

Thanks,

T.

SgtT; You might try having a look at MaskRider's site. http://www.mask-rider.com/index.html

He has a list of what you need for his scenery. Trees, objects, etc. I think most of the scenery you install will tell you how to put the items in your GSL folder. Once ya do it a couple of times, there is nothing to it.

As you start installing missions and campaigns you will have to find some ships, planes, objects. I keep all of these items on storage devices so I will not have to go looking for them again. Before long you will have almost all the items you will need. Now and then you run into something you just can't find. With a little luck, one of the fellas here might help ya.

If you want some easy to install good looking scenery textures get Dvslats latest set.

It's always a good idea to back up your stock cfs2 gsl or anything else, before ya add to it.

I am sure some of the cfs2 gurus will have lots of info for you.

Hope that maskrider link works for ya, I still have a problem with links.(A simple task I am STILL trying to master!):ernae:

GSL 101

Re: GSL (Global Scenery Layer)

Start by reading:

Re: Objects

All objects you need will be specified (or included) in any campaign or scenery package you should wish to install.

Don't worry too much about any others, unless you are building missions or campaigns.
An object must be inserted into a mission or GSL gob to be used.

Just loading objects into CFS2 will not make them appear in the sim.

Many scenery packages will use objects, pre-installed into GSL packets called "gobs".
Read & follow the authors directions on how to install these "gobs" using a GSL Editor. (which is often supplied)

Installing & removing GSL gobs is allot like sex ... do it once & you quickly understand how it all works.

Dirtman,
thanks for that link. Some really interesting stuff there, but unfortunately the two threads to which rhumbaflappy gave links in post #11 appear to have gone walkabout. I don't suppose anyone could offer alternative links or might happen to have copies of the contents of those older threads, please,
Ro

GREAT CAMPAIGN that uses GSL

.
.

If you want to get your feet wet installing GSL then I highly recommend Pen32win's EXCELLENT campaign: The Big-E Fast CV Raids of 1942

This is where I did my first GSL installation.

There are several parts (all listed in the "readme"). Find the 2 major uploads here:

The Big-E Fast CV Raids of 1942 Pak 1

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/page.php?lloc=downloads&loc=downloads&page=info&FileID=2815

The Big-E Fast CV Raids of 1942 Pak 2

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/page.php?lloc=downloads&loc=downloads&page=info&FileID=2816

The GSL gobs are provided with easy to follow instructions on installing them. The real GREAT part is that you can access the updated scenery from Freeflight & Quick Combat.

You will not believe how full of destroyable objects the updated bases are .... certainly a "target rich environment". I use "Kwajalein Atoll" as a target practice range .... it is just LOADED with stuff to blow up!!!

There are many other unique feature included in the campaign missions like LIVE "off-shore bombardment" by the battleships.

Everyone should fly this campaign as it is one of the best ever built.

Caution: I am unsure what effect installing mesh would have on the GSL scenery as it was built long before we had the new mesh packages from Rhumba.

I would not install any mesh just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for recommending the campaign, unfortunately I am unable to open the zip files after I download them. I get a message that the files may be corrupt.

Is there another download location?

Thanks,

T.

No Sweat Bro

Thanks for recommending the campaign, unfortunately I am unable to open the zip files after I download them. I get a message that the files may be corrupt.

Thanks,

Seems the d/l is still corrupted from the server meltdown last year

I will speak to Rami and get this fixed tomorrow.

or

you can PM me your email info (DO NOT PUT IT IN THIS THREAD) I will send you the 2 parts plus another zip of containing the other core files so you won't need to hunt them down.
- 1x 7MB and 2x 3MB

As I thought, the package comes with a single GSL gob plus "GSLMan" which you use to install the gob. This will update 6 stock Pacific bases with the new GSL based objects.
- Historically Correct GSL Layer Bases (Roi-Namur, Kwajalein, Taroa, Wotje, Wake and Marcus).

From the "readme":

7. Scenery - Put the gsl file named “CV6_FCR.gsl” and “GSLMan.exe” into your CFS2 GSL folder. MAKE a BACKUP of the original cfs2.gsl. It's just good practice to do it as this will overwrite the stock GSL scenery!! Use the GSL Manager to add the CV6_FCR.gsl file to your existing cfs2.gsl. That should do it. Try it in FF Or Qc, you should have a new scenery new scenery at the bases listed above.

In simplified terms:
1) copy the gob & GSLMan.exe to your CFS2 GSL folder.
2) create a new folder (inside the GSL folder) copy the stock CFS2 GSL file into it (for a back-up)
3) double-click the GSLMan.exe to open it.
4) click to highlight the gob
5) hit "add"
6) hit "exit" on GSLMan
6) done - the scenery is installed & ready to be: blowed up real good!

See? ... no black magic, evil spells or Voodoo.

Thanks, PM sent look forward to installing the campaign and the GSL files.

Thanks again for the help.

Adding gsl scenery using gslman can overwrite scenery in the same gob area.
To find more info on this subject ask Martin Wright for his gsl tools.
You have to email him for his developers tools,
you can find his website if you google gsl tools or developes corner.
I hope the info is ok.
There is a lot to learn about adding gsl scenery so keep searching and asking we are all here to help.
