Really low FPS...normal?

Okay, this is a shot from a QC mission I set up. Five wingies, no enemy a/c. I'm flying with 48 RFC based in Bellevue on April 4, 1917.

4 FPS
Shot02-08-09-23-51-10.jpg

I'm running a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 o/ced to 3.2.
4 gig ram
8800GTX 768
XP SP2

All settings set to 2 except for aircraft at 4.

Done all the tweaks I could find on the board regarding an Nvidia card.

No AF, No AA.

Is this acceptable or am I screwing something up somewhere?

I defragged with Ultimate Defrag. I closed down all unnecessary processes with Enditall.

If I look out the other direction, I get 25/30 FPS.

Just a CFS3 thing I'll have to get used to?

Drivin' me nuts trying to squeeze out a few extra frames, but my rig isn't THAT old...I should be getting better.

Anything I missed?

I'm running a stock Q6600 Quad at 2.4
3Gigs Ram
8600 GT 512
XP SP3

Sliders at 4,3,3,4,1

Lowest I've ever seen is an 11, most times 15, get away from the field mid 20's . . Those Bristol Fighters seem to eat up alot of video power, but 4 ? Try an SE5a see if it's just that aircraft.

Yeah, the F2Bs are hard on the frames, but the SE5as were only getting 9-10. And I can't even get near the front without FPS taking a nose-dive. Granted, away from the front or an Aerodrome, and I can get up to the 30s and 40s, but as soon as I turn near one, the FPS goes to single digits. I can lock the FPS at around 25, but in a dogfight it's still very distracting if I'm over the front.

There's got to be something screwy here. I've got to have missed something.

First cap your FPS at 30

C:\OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\default

then this line like this:

<Graphics OldAircraftRender="No" MaxFPS="30"/>

Then try FSAA at x16. If that works put AF on x16 too. I know it sounds screwy but my game ate it up.

It may be something else, but my rig is similar to yours so if the above doesn't do all that it might I'll give you my other settings too. Try the above first though.

One assumes you already have your resolution maxed out?

Something terribly wrong there. With that hardware you should be seeing better performance for sure....particularly with the sliders set so low. Weird indeed. Hopefully you'll stumble on a quick solution.

Cheers,

Parky

Have you tried installing SP3? There is a multi-core optimizer in the program. It helped out a lot with my E8500. My machine is very similar to yours (I also have the 8800GTX, but only 2Gb RAM) and I very rarely see my fps drop below 30. Most times they are in the 40-60 range. You should be tearing it up with your machine! Do you have the latest Nvidia driver installed?

I've got my FPS capped at 25 now. I'll try the maxing our AF and AA, though...couldn't hurt.

After some more tweaking (honestly can't remember what all I did)...I got it to around 11 FPS in that scenario. I think it's just a combo of the Brisfit, that Aerodrome, and the closeness of the front that causes the drop in FPS.

And I've got the Update with the Multi-core optimization...just d/led it separately.

And yep, I'm running at max res.

I'll keep pluggin' at it.

Thanks for the tips lads.

Well, I just tried maxing out the AF and AA. And while I didn't notice any FPS improvement...it didn't get any worse, either! So, now at least it looks better! :)

I'm taking a break from tweaking and gonna load up a squad in a quieter area of the Front...I feel the need to shoot things down.

You might want to give this a try and what did wonders for my frame rate. I found that changing the Nvidia control panel 3D v-sync setting to Force Off vs Use 3D application settings really helped. By the way, I'm running XP Home with SP2 with a E8400 OC'd to 3.6 GHz. As for installing SP3....to each his own I guess, but from what I read of others who did...well, I opted for the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" premise and I'm getting along just fine.

I've already got it to Force Off, actually. I think it's just going to be a limitation of my CPU combined with the Brisfit and a whole buncha ground objects. Still having a great time with it otherwise.

Thanks again...

The only thing about it is, with the hardware setup you have you should be getting a lot better performance than what you are. Like I said, our systems are not that different and I'm getting 40-60fps (30s in a furball) with the sliders at 5,4,4,5,1, which is why I'm curious as to why your performance is so poor. What mobo are you using?

CJ

NForce 680I MB.

The system is actually an Alienware SLI rig, but one of the 8800s crashed on me, so no more SLI.

Like I said, if I'm not over the front, I get 30-40 frames...even in a furball.

RAM issue perhaps? I've got 4gb (yes I know only 3 will be recognized in XP), I haven't tested the sticks, but Windows is seeing them correctly. There's nothing running in the background that shouldn't, either. No viruses.

I'm also running a 680i so about the only difference in our systems is the processor (I'm using an E8500)and the fact that you have 2 more gigs of ram than I do. I guess it could be the processor difference, but there again, gimpyguy reports better numbers than you and he's running a stock Q6600 and an 8800 GT. You should be getting at least as good, no, better performance than he is. Since my performance with a similar computer is so much better than what you're getting, would you like me to post all of my settings?

It isn't viruses that may be the problem - You should not have your AV or firewall programmes running unless flying online. So many people leave them on all the time.
Google in the word" Blackviper"
He has a site which shows you how to disable LOADS of processes that will be running on your computer and which will be eating up your processor resources.

There are extreme settings and safe settings - your choice - but if you do not go on the internet with your gaming machine it will gain you big FPS savings

I would next try removing two sticks of that RAM, just to rule it out. Especially on that chipset. Leave slots 1 and 3 populated.

I'd like to see your settings...I have a similar setup, and I get heavy fps hits two times: when near the front, with multiple airstrips and whenever I encounter two seaters. Its more annoyance, but any gain is better.

Actual game test results show that a core 2 duo E8400 and E8500 will outperform the quad core chip you have because all but a few current games are NOT optimized for quad core processors (and for sure wasn't the case with CFS3 coding). See this Tom's Hardware CPU comparison chart and select any of the game test demos vs non-game applications. The fact I'm seeing better performance with the E8400 vs your quad extreme processor tends to support this.

This is how it's set up. Mind you, I don't turn anything off while playing OFF. My AV and firewall and all of the other programs that run in the background are running. I tried Alacrity PC and it didn't make a whole lot of difference, so I uninstalled it. Try these and see what happens. Just a thought, are you running current mobo drivers?
