Really low FPS...normal?

It isn't viruses that may be the problem - You should not have your AV or firewall programmes running unless flying online. So many people leave them on all the time.
Google in the word" Blackviper"
He has a site which shows you how to disable LOADS of processes that will be running on your computer and which will be eating up your processor resources.

There are extreme settings and safe settings - your choice - but if you do not go on the internet with your gaming machine it will gain you big FPS savings

Already done that ages ago. :) I'm a stickler for running a "clean" machine.

I'm gonna try Camel's settings and see...the only real difference I see though is a few overrides that are different.

Well, tried your settings and it got worse. So, if you could try something for me: Start a new Pilot, fly as England, Fighter, 48 RFC, and start on April 6th. Then go to QC and load up a free flight with 5 wingies, start from the field, and tell me what kinda FPS you get when you look to your left (towards your wingman).

You're right, it was a big drop in fps, but not as drastic as what you're experiencing. 18+fps. You were talking about Biffs on April 6 1918 right? The closest I could get was April 10th.

Sorry, I meant 1917, but I don't think that would make a difference. I feel a bit better now...at least I know it's not just my machine.

Thanks for the test!

I think I've finally gotten it to a point where it's tolerable. I even lowered all the sound files to 8-bit to see if it mattered ( a little)...

Maybe I'll look into "Downgrading" to an E8500! ;)

Thanks again for the hints and suggestions, guys...this community is awesome.

For another comparison, with a new pilot, April 10th, 1917, 48 RFC squadron, and set to Bristol F2b aircraft w/4 wingmen, my frame rate was 20 to 21 with outside view looking left over my plane to the (4) wingmen, raining and full cloud cover. This was just setting on the ground. Panning dropped my frame rate into the teens.

Changing from the Bristol F2b to the Spad XII with same position on the ground looking left at the (4) wingmen my frame rate was running at 29.

Obviously the Bristol F2b (and multiples) requires a greater degree of rendering than the Spad - which having flown only the Spad XIII so far I hadn't run into the dropped frame rate.

Of note, my fps results where at 16AA, 16 AF at a 1600x1200 resolution with my cpu OC'd to 3.6 GHz and my GTX 260-216 SC card running at 680 MHz core, 1104 memory settings (which is greater than the default core/memory speeds for the SC edition I have, and the OFF sliders at (5) except for terrain and scenery at (3).

Nvida 8800 GTS 512 card settings

I am running at 60-30fps with these settings. The only issue I have is the "white artifact" or "triangles" in the scenery when I change my POV too quickly with TrackerIR---and that is very, very minor.

Thanks to Parky and Pol for helping me get my "new" video card config'd last summer. These are basicly the same settings I used for P2

For what is worth, my system and settigns:

2.4 Intel Dual Core, P35 Chipset, 3 gig RAM, 8800 GTS 512 card*
22" monitor, resolution = max @ 1400x1050x32 refresh rate 75hz

I have the card over clocked 12% to:
GPU core 728 MHz, GPU mem 1064 MHz, Shadder 1820 MHz

Slidders: 4,3,3,4

Nvidia settings:

Anisotropic Filtering 8x
Antialiasing On
Antialiasing Mode Override
Antialiasing-Setting 8x
Antialiasing-Transparency Multisampling
Conformant Texture Clamp Use Open GL Spec
Error Reporting Off
Extention Limits Off
Force Mipmaps Bilinear
Max Pre-rendered Frames 8
Multi-display/Mixed GPU Acceleration Mutilple Display Mode
Texture Filtering -Anisotropic Sample Opitmizaion On
Texture Filtering-NEG LOD bias Clamp
Texture Filtering Quality- High Performance
Texture Filtering-Trilinear OPtimization On
Threaded Optimization On
Vertical Sync Force On

Is this a typo (hi-lighted) ??

The only (4) options I see for the Nvidia 3D settings/Texture Filtering are High Quality, Quality, Performance, High Performance

Yeah, I put the hyphen in the wrong place.. it should be High Performance.

Thanks, I will edit my post...

I'm going to have to try the High Performance setting....which I wasn't aware would work with some level of AA and AF cranked in. Also, I've always set the AA and AF to "OFF" and Texture Filtering to "High Performance" when I run 3Dmark06 to test my system.

Give it a try...I am not a wiz kid on this stuff, network engineering is my thing. I know enough to get started and get in trouble:help:.
Be sure to see my note about my vc being overclocked.....I don't know how much difference that makes, if any??

Something in those settings didn't agree with my setup. Once I got airborne I was greeted with multiple large squares of ground with nothing showing/rendered except large RAF (round) insignia that gradually filled in with normal ground cover as I flew by. When I exited the QC mission my system froze/locked up at the "Are you sure" shutdown applet requiring a reboot. I reset the nvidia 3D settings to default except for my usual AF, AA, and v-sync forced OFF, restarted the game and a QC mission and the rendering was normal...
