Nice "get away" project. I always thought the Rearwin was a great looking plane. I have 3 projects going so I can switch when I need a break. My real "take a break" project for the moment is starting to learn Gmax. I always gave up do to lack of patience in the past so I am trying a different approach. I am learning what the program will do and where everything is before I even start a project. So far that seems to work. I have been having fun with the root tools which are very powerful compared to FSDS.

Good on ya Paul. I bought FSDS on a wim roughly four years ago after reading up about it and seeing what it was about. Like you with Gmax, I was lost from the start and overwhelmed with what was inside. From there on I was intimidated by both FSDS and Gmax. I imagine they both do basically the same as for modeling. Ever since I overcame the intimidating part, I really enjoy creating for addicting as it is.

The Rearwin Speedster was a one off that got my attention.

The 'trusswork' on the gable ends of that 'paint shop' are a bit of a worry....;)

This aircraft is "sporty" looking for the time isn't it. Too bad it never passed regulations back in the day and was only a prototype. I guess this particular model was basically tore apart and pieces of it were strewn all over. Put out in the back 40 and forgotten due to heavy updates and modifications. I think the next model was the Sportster. Not sure on that as I haven't bothered reading the history about other Rearwin aircraft that followed.

As for the model, this one is coming along fairly quickly modeling wise. Modeling wise my learn-what-NOT-to-do, so I can keep from backing up and fixing things, has gotten a mark on the positive side of experiences. I imagine with every model comes new methods in creation. One good thing with this model, lesser parts to map. So this one will be used for learning that portion of modeling. Just my thinking about the mapping of the Aeronca "K" makes me cringe.


The exterior (short of control horn bits & pieces) is almost final. The windshield and framing on the other hand, has had the gears in my head turning as/to how to go about cutting it out. I've got a plan to do the windshield in about 3 cuts to get the pieces I need. It should work. I hope. :kilroy: :icon_lol:

Edit: Almost forgot to acknowledge Roger. All my models will get released. When, I've no idea,,yet.

By the way, I like the "vintage" aircraft. Odds are you won't see anything other from me.
 
Progress report; 7-21-2013

Taking a break from my Aeronca K project, work on the Rearwin Speedster was the focus this weekend.

7-21-2013;
New wheel pants,
Landing gear struts reworked,
Fuselage (nose area) reworked and cleaned up,
Exhaust system reworked and lots of cowl tidbits added.
All plugs are in place for cutting out windows, doors, cowl louvers, nose intakes, etc.

Excuse the jaggy images as this is a Gmax thing.

Very cool! It's good to see the rarer types being modeled, as opposed to all Cessnas and Pipers.
 
This one has a nice stance. I think (so far) I've done a fairly good representation for what little information is available.
As for the cockpit, I'm confident I can pull it off for visuals. It's a pretty sporty plane for the era.

Great work! Always liked the look of the Rearwin. There was a good looking, Rotax 503-powered, single seat ultralight a few years back that looked very much like one called the Bellaire.
