Yes thats a perfect photo to illustrate specular effects and jagged shadows at the same time. Well done give that man a beer :icon29: I liked Frosty's mention of config that does ring a bell. May be a lot easier than tweaking the shaders.xml.

...notice that the wing in front has the jagged edges at the back of the wing and the wing in the back has them in front???
It's not all around?

I just took a look at this again, and the reason that some of the edges are smooth is that they are straight and oriented perpendicular to the light source. You can change the viewing angle of the observer and the shadow shape stays the same. If you taxi the aircraft around to a new heading the shadow edge shape constantly changes from coarse to fine to no jaggies and back again.

Would one of you who know about the shaders file and how it works like to do an entry for the knowledge base, please? Even if it only about one aspect, in a way you think obvious!

Thanks!

holly molly i read all this on shone , and tried out that addon didnt like removed , then i said wait dug deeper and found on shader - change to true from false all of em

SpecularEnable="False"-change to true ,,,, all of em down the line and it works super amazing shine...im impressed thats it

Link to thread

Hi Dutchman,
the thread you were looking for is I think the one posted first by FBP on 22 Aug '04. In it he details a work around for either the lack of an s.dds file, or for an ATI card without drivers to show the shine.

He explained how to edit the shaders.xml file. Look for the line: "specularenable="false"" and change to "true".

In the same thread, Awesome explained how he edited the shaders.xml file to allow fog in your skybox, and to have more transparent smoke. Now I don't understand any of this of course. Its all monkey-see, monkey-do for me :icon_lol:

Link? where is it?

Specular Enable Thread

Drop me a pm
Hi Nacht,
I had about 60 minutes of panic - couldn't find the thread on my PC, then I remembered I have old stuff in hard copy...finally found it! Hard copy only so until I scan it can't send it to anybody.:frown:

BUT I had an idea - here is the ID for the thread - path will have changed no doubt but here are the details it may be found on the archive:
www.cfcforums.com/showthread.php?t=3058
Other details, thread started by FBP dated 22 August 2004 at 1:58pm. Thread titled "Specular Enable".

I will have a rummage through the archive but haven't done this for ages.

ALSO I found another great thread for the more technically minded, on the same subject (but also only in hard copy drat :banghead:). This one is titled "Standalone" all one word but gets into hex-editing for reflection and shine.

The thread id is 16573, The author is Kevboy, dated 13 April 2005 at 4:18am. Scroll down to the posts by Corrado - this is where it starts to get interesting. Apparently Corrado has a link to a tutorial showing how to get reflections and specular shine using a hex editor. Mind you this probably doesn't answer the original question of this thread about enabling sheen without having the right video card drivers (read: when you've got an ATI card :a1310: ).

Maybe Corrado can comment on this?

Nacht, one day soon I will scan my old paper copy and send it to you.

Will Scan Thread

Well I feel a bit silly - there have of course been numerous rebuilds to this site since that thread was posted. Hence the chances of finding the Specular Enable thread here at SOH are just about zilch.

I will scan and upload the post to this thread. I'm doing medical stuff tomorrow so it may be Tuesday (NZT).

thanks to you guys and the posted who styarted this thread i have read and dug up old post and did it ... i know have shine that i love and really does a good job of deep immersion in flight and the reality of the real old world . comes alive

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

loverboy1- thanks

I'm going to attempt to trans-scribe these into the forum if that is alright with everyone. I need to work on my typing skills and this beats doing something that no one will ever use. Let me know if anyone has an issue with it.
