to build an blended airfield has been my life for the past two days but it's all coming back. I managed to get the hard part done now it's just a matter of populating this first of five fields I'm working on.

Can you guess what drome this is? It was a prewar field built by the Aussies. The both IJN and IJAAF aircraft occupied the base at one time.
The top of the picture is dead North.

Back in the Saddle Again!

Nope, Next Clue, This drome is also a Stock Field but MS missed the mark. I'm replacing it and building the 4 other fields that were in the area. It's not any of the Rabaul Fields either.

Pen, That looks good.It didn`t take long to get back into the swing of things, did it? I have one for you ,if it is ok to post it once someone figures out which one that one is.As for me I don`t have a clue which one it is.

Thanks Bob;

The hardest part was remembering all of the Masking and Layering steps and then the good old SCASM tricks for getting a Background image to stay flat on the ground and not swallow up your buildings. :costumes: MR's Tutorial came to the rescue more than once....

Sure you can post one, might as well have some fun with this. Isn't that why we do this stuff? :ernae:

OK, one more clue. PNG.

Pen,it took me about a day to after not doing scenery for awhile to get in the grove again. Now fellows see if you can not only figure out Pens but this location as well.

I'm with Kdriver and think that it's Wewack too.

It's a pleasant little place on the north shore of New Guinea. Rumors of headhunters and cannibals shouldn't be discounted and local legend has it that Captain Nemo's Nautilus battled a large squid in the vicinity. It's a whale of a tale I'm told.

Update:

While searching for more giant squid off of the north coast of New Guinea, Captain Nemo discovered a huge construction program at Wewack. As there was no evidence of guano mining, he sailed on to the safer waters of Bikini Atol.

I was going to say Boram, but it wasn't built until September 1943.

The isthmus doesn't look right for Salamaua (and the strip is facing the wrong way).

The second pic looks kind of like Dagua to me.

Give Kdriver a cigar!

That is Wewak Central also known as "Wirui". Boram is up next. Then the two "But" fields. But East is Dagua.

Now MS put their field right at the base of the Cape Wom. The small strip there was actually out on the peninsula. I'm going to have to talk to one of the ground 2K guys to wipe out the stock field before I do that one.

I got all of the buildings done this morning now I just have a behind load of trees to plant. I hope to have some pictures late tonight but right now I've got a horse that wants my attention.

Just a FYI, Boram was built before Sept '43. By June 2nd of '43 it was considered a worthy target for B-17's and B-24"s.
That date is when they completed extension of the runway.

Bob, you're going to have to give me something to go on. Knowing you it's probably in the Solomons.

Pen true, Sept of 42.between the 20TH and 23RD VMF 223,224 and part of VF5 moved to Fighter 2 because of the drainage problem on Fighter 1.At that point Fighter 1 became an emergency strip for damaged AC to use. This kept Henderson and Fighter 2 clear for flyable AC.When VMF 223 and VMSB 232 landed on the 20th of Aug at Henderson Field it was 1st come 1st served as far as takingoff went durring a raid.

Well it depends on the drome. Most of it comes from books and the web (Pacific Wrecks dot com is a super research site). Google is my best friend for this kind of stuff. Combine that with Google Earth and a good portion of just plain old dumb luck, sometimes good, sometimes you have to use your imagination to fill in the gaps. Google Earth is a great way to find the center of the old runways. In many cases even packed dirt fields like all of those in the Wewak area can still be located. Europe is actually harder in the case of many of the German fields. Thin documentation and massive over build. You get some of this in the PTO, like Henderson fighter II is now a golf course, but not nearly as much as the ETO.

When luck is running my way there's a good line map of the field to go with the war time photos. Sometimes the photos are good and it's easy to pick out the details, most of the time they're not that good. Take the field I'm currently working on. There are no maps of the field and only a few photos taken from an F-5 (P-38 Recon Bird) and they're OK. From my reading I know there are 88 fighter revetments at the SE Dispersal and 15 Bomber at the NW; but in the photos you'd be doing well to find 10. So you know the area and what its function was and you can see the taxiways. From there it's just guess work. Reading about the field can give you a lot of info about the runway surface, conditions, length and headings, AA postions. So you have to take all of the parts you can gather and just do the best you can.

Getting it perfect is not my goal, 70+ years on it's just unrealistic. I try to get it in the right location with the right runway headings and from there any detail I can confirm and recreate is a bonus.

PS. A couple of other little hints to keep you from going insane.
1. The coordinates on the map may not exaclty match the CFS2 world, especially around shorelines. Match the terrain, not the numbers.
2. Sometimes, just when you think you're done with a base a new photo or map shows up. If it's a little off, let it go. If it's alot off do it again. It's never as easy as it sounds, always a tough call...LOL. Remember, bases where in a constant state of change. We can't do it all. I tried with the ETO and I drove myself nuts with the details to the point that I didn't want anything to do with it anymore. Spare yourself the frustration.

the most important is offcourse coordinates and position, the rest i agree can be left slightly to imagination but the odd pic and refs helps a lot.I am now learning how to use FSSC properly and soon i hope to be able to build my first base from scratch,i'm thinking of Noumea to start with.

Pen32Win I do not know what base is it or where it is located. But I do know you are making this Sim better and better and I appreciate it very much!

Thank you!:ernae:

PS and that goes for you Dog1 also!
