I saw this documentary.........or investigative educational TV Show........PBS'esque.......

On the coal bunker fire theory...............

Great info, historic photo's, and in depth background on the USS Maine and the events leading up to the explosion.

Can't remember which channel or who did the investigation???
 
Admiral Rickover had the Main incident reinvestigated when he was CNO. The conclulsion as I recall: Smouldering coal set off the black powder in one of the forward magazines.

Smouldering coal and bunker fires destroyed more than one man of war in the early, coal fired steam age.

Is not the main mast from the USS Maine still standing at the US Naval Academy?
 
here she is in color I haven't painted here as of yet just wanted to see what she looked like sitting in the Havana

btw her mast is in Arlington National Cemetery
