Reserve and European Thuds

JensOle

SOH-CM-2023
Hi,

The WiP pics of the new RAZBAM Weasel Thud tempted me into removing some dust from the good old Alphasim F-105D. It was an early FSX model, and with some rework it is still a good model. I did a few repaints for it which were never released of a early 80's Hill 466th TFS bird and a mid 60’s SEA scheme painted European 49th TFW bird. And here are a few screenshots from my latest flights.

F-105D 61-115 of the 466th Tactical Fighter Squadron (419th TFW), Air Force Reserves based at Hill AFB in the early 1980's. Many of the squadrons aircraft got a wrap around camouflage scheme, but 115 kept the SEA scheme with grey underside, but had black tail markings. Of notice is also the faded and drab colors of the SEA scheme.
Inert AGM-45 Shrike missiles on the outer pylons.

LOL, looks like they have some serious work ahead of them on that bird... And the fat ww2 era bombs looks a bit out of place there in front of the 105.

Regarding the bombs, during SEA wwII vintage bombs were used until stocks cleared, it´s a fact, i´ve seen A-6 Intruder videos carrying such bombs, not to mention F-100´s and thuds..

and to illustrate my point:

Sure, you have to stand the corny top gun music, but you´ll see A-6´s armed with WWII vintage bombs

Best regards

Here's a European Thud I looked at last Friday. Very much 'WIP' as you can see...;)

Thats been sitting there for so many years now. Its such a shame - it arrived in the same shipment as the F-15 which has recently been repainted since being put on display and the SR-71 which has home in the American Museum.

I don't know why the iconic Thud was never started.....? Its radome sits on a shelf over to the left and back of the hangar..... :isadizzy:

So Jens, does this mean you are going to release them? I would love a wrap around camo for my Thud. BTW, are those FS9 compliant or strictly FSX? They look great.

Yeah, both the USAF and specially the navy dropped everything they could find during the 1960's over SEA, including large quantities of left over ww2 bombs (as often seen on the A-1, B-57, F-100 and navy/usmc aircraft)<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
But I have never seen F-105D/Fs flying with the old ww2 box fin bombs, every single picture I have in my books covering the Thud either shows M117/M118 series or MK80-series of bomb (or CBU bombs). I believe the old bombs were not cleared for use on hi speed aircraft as the F-105 (the navy A-6 was far from a mach 2 aircraft like the F-105). Even during the first years of F-105 missions over N-V, I can only find pictures of M117/MK80 series of GP bombs.

<o:p>I can of course be wrong, I’m no F-105 armament expert

I stand to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure the SR-71 is a far more recent addition to the collection than the F-15.

Regardless of that, bear in mind these two aircraft were donated virtually straight after retirement from front line service, and so were pretty much ready to display after reassembling at Duxford. The F-105 by contrast appears to have spent some considerable time neglected and exposed to the elements somewhere, thus entailing a major restoration project.

As to why they haven't done anything to it yet, well Duxford relies on the efforts of enthusiastic volunteers, and there may not be enough of them to deal with everything. Also, now there is a conservation area in the new Airspace hangar, the priority may have been to get the Shackleton and Victor under shelter and get some urgent remedial work done on those two.

Duxford seems to have a policy of rescuing aircraft and storing them well away from the scrap dealer's furnace, even though they may not be able to start restoration immediately. The Thud may look a bit sad at the moment, but at least she is safe and will one day be returned to her former glory. :)

Jens, sorry to hijack your thread, matey! :ernae:

The AFRES Thud is finally uploaded, enjoy!

Would it be possible for you to stick a "TH" tail code on one of the SEA camo paints? It brings back memories of when I lived near Carswell AFB and watched the 301st do their thing. I've been "flying" my Thud out of Fort Worth alot lately, and using the MegaScenery photo real scenery. It would be nice if you could. Thanks!

Hi Paul,

Sorry to do this, but the three of them arrived together - see paragraph 3 http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/hangar/2002/f15/f15.htm

SR-71 was first to be reassembled, followed by the F-15A (which had lay at AMARC since 1994) a little while after, and the Thud lay dormant.

I believe that Thud has shrapnel damage somewhere on it.

Yep, that would be awesome. I got there after they had transitioned to the F-4's but they had a 105 on display as you pulled into the 301st parking lot. That's been moved, along with an F-4 and F-16, over by the BX.

I was diligently going about redoing the VC with all new Hi-Res textures and decided to check the alignment of the gauges. Discovered there is no VC section in the panel config file. Work has stopped temporarily, lol.

Update: There is a VC section in the cfg file, but no "placeholder" supplied in the config file so no way to add or update the VC panel unless someone can suggest a way. I'd be interested to know how folks are using the airplane when you can't (easily) replace all the outdated gauges??

Also, as age progresses, I get more and more confused by simple things, lol. Is this the Freeware F-105. Jens mentions in the initial post that it's an old FSX version, but there is no freeware FSX version on their freeware site, just the $35.00 Payware version. If it's old. . .maybe it should have an "old" price tag, lol.

It's not the old FS8/9 freeware version (available on the Virtavia freeware page) - there was a two-seat version with that; this is the later one with FS9 and native FSX versions. It came out around 2007/8 so is an 'early' FSX add-on.
