Rest in Peace Colonel George E. "Bud" Day

I knew based upon the character of the people here that someone would beat me to posting this thread.

Colonel Day was a man's man and a hero's hero. He was an AFSOC warrior his entire life and was devoted to the Hurlburt Field community. When you met him, he wanted to talk about you more than he wanted to talk about himself and he talked about himself only because he knew people wanted it to be that way. When he asked you about yourself, you were just so convinced your own life's achievements were so unworthy as to be worth nothing to speak of to him. But, he wouldn't have it that way.

He fought many good fights in his life. Won some and lost a few. One he lost later in his life was the battle to force the US government to regard a promise made as a promise required. He rightly claimed that military retirees were promised a lifetime of free medical care. The government saw the bills and chose to ignore those promises. Court language negated promises but Bud Day made the government speak to the issue and take a stand. The government saw it that it was a lot easier to tell a bunch of young men to sign here for this than it was to actually pay for it when the young men became old men and were no longer worth anything in service.

He didn't do it for him. He did it for others. Colonel Day knew there were plenty of other veterans without the income sources he enjoyed. He knew they needed that care and were not always receiving it.

We lost a friend and a good American today. Farewell, Colonel Day!
