I was actually expecting shots of the F-4. They were the real "Rhinos" after all...

However, you do know the U.S. Navy actually does refer to the Super Hornet as the Rhino around the boat to differentiate it from the standard Hornet?

Haha!! Yes You are indeed correct!!! I'm sure when A2A come out with their "Rhino" We'll both have a bunch of pics to post! :)

"Rhino"= F/A-18 SuperHornet E,F and G,E/A Growler.
 
Anyone know why the Super Bug is dubbed "Rhino". With the double ugly, lead sled, great smoking thunderhog Phantom one can see a resemblence to the animal. I like and fly all the F-18s but can't help thinking of them all as "lawn darts."

Supposedly, when the F-8 Crusader piliots were first shown pictures of the Phantom no one spoke and then one said, "It's upside down!"

I know. I still think they could have thought of a better name 'though.

Like "bumblebee" or "wasp" or so to emphasize the family ties to the Hornet.
 
It's called "Rhino" because it's heavier than the C/D models.

Max takeoff weight of the Super Hornet is 66,000 lbs as opposed to the 51,900 lbs of the C/D.

The Super Hornet can also bring more fuel and weapons back on board, so it ill be heavier than a C/D Hornet on landing, something the arresting crews will need to know.

Part of the reason, but not the sole reason.

Also, they need more than to just know it's a Rhino to set up the arresting gear... what really matters is the exact weight including ordnance and fuel load.
