Rhumbas mesh in a Euro install

Ive just succsefully install'd Sanders coasts and LC files following Ramis instruction guide, and everthing looks good and works fine, thanks guys :icon29:.
I thought i'd install the mesh last after i'd got everything else to work, i wanted to try the FSTerrain ive got installed in FS2004, works better than i thought but abit strange in place's, so i think its time to give Rhumbas a try,
one thing i dont understand is, if your installing LOD8 mesh, you dont need to install the LOD 5 or DEM mesh, 8 is the most powerful and detailed and renders everthing below it redundant, its also a lot less to download, am i missing a good reason for installing all the packs, just wondering.

Ian,

It's my pleasure, I'm glad to be of service with "the guide." With regard to your observation, the LOD 5 mesh is the "basic" mesh...the LOD 7 and LOD 8 provide enhanced detail in specific areas.

Thanks for the reply Rami, that makes things clearer, but i was looking at the amount of files by Rhumbas needed, 40 for DEM and lod8, i figure there's no point downloading files for areas i'll never fly over, is there a way of telling which file is for which area,
cheers ian

Ive just found Richards site, he's got interactive maps for all his mesh, unfortunatly, every time i select an area to download,i have to disable my "pop up blocker" and im then directed to a PC Tech site by Tim Acheson, whoever he is?

Hi Ian

If all else fails, you can use BGL Analyze to 'peek' into each file and see which areas they cover. You should be able to find it at Avsim, Flightsim, Simviation etc.

Ian,

My solution to your dilemma is to run all of my installs, from Europe to the Med to the Pacific, off of one set of centralized Watermasks and LOD mesh. In the scenery.cfg files of all of my installs, (except the Pacific, because I use the stock coastlines) the relevant sections look like this...

[Area.002]
Title=Terrain
Local=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS2 Scenery\Scenedb\Water and LOD 5
Active=TRUE
Texture_ID=1
Layer=1
Required=TRUE
Remote=

[Area.012]
Title=DEM mesh
Local=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS2 Scenery\Scenedb\DEM mesh LOD 7
Active=TRUE
Layer=12
Required=TRUE
Remote=

[Area.013]
Title=DEM mesh LOD 8
Local=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS2 Scenery\Scenedb\DEM mesh LOD 8
Active=TRUE
Layer=13
Required=TRUE
Remote=

I also do the same thing for any scenery folder used in more than one install. That way, there's no problem downloading all of the mesh, it gets used one way or another anyway.

Thats a lot of files for a little use, esp as i was'nt planning more than one install at the moment, its a shame the maps on Richard's site isnt working, that would have been perfect. thanks for the imput though.

On my website try

Alternate SRTM-based world mesh files for CFS2 by map

This alternate was put there in case the first link bombed ( it did as Microsoft changed their SkyDrive file links ).

Dick thanks again for the huge effort you made on our behalf, to improve the CFS2 world, you are one of our heroes.:medals::icon29:
