Riddle me this... a gauge question

WarHorse47

SOH-CM-2024
Why would a gauge work in a 2D panel but only partly function in the VC panel?

Here's the scenario. I just ported-over the AlphaSim B-57 Canberra to FSX. Everything works pretty well except for the gauges in the VC. None of the gauges display tool tips, nor can they be adjusted. Even the simicons for the various subpanels do not work. The ADI does show the direction but in order to set the heading or CRS bug, I have to use the 2D panel.

What causes this, something that's missing from the model since its an FS9 port-over?

This is new - to me, at least. I've always found that a gauge either works in FSX or it doesn't - no half-measures. I can't think of anything that would stop a gauge working in the VC while allowing it to work in the 2D panel (other than bloody-mindedness!).

The only thing that I can suggest is that you find another aircraft of the same vintage/type already in your hangar and replace the gauges one-by-one - seeing if each one works as you swap them over.

One thing to watch for is the possibility of having both a .GAU file and an XML .CAB file with the same name. This can lead to confusion.
Another thing to check is if you have an FSX version of a gauge in the main gauges folder, and the FS9 version in the panel subfolder (one reason why I always keep ALL gauges in the main FSX gauges folder).

I'm going to try porting this bird myself. Curiosity.

Update

Just ported this aircraft. There are no gauge issues at all - except for this: the gauge control knobs do not work in the VC (mouseover has no effect). The icons don't work either, although the autopilot lamp does illuminate.
Take a look.

Replacing the icons with the standard FSX ones should cure that issue, but the control knobs not functioning in the VC is more troubling.

Yep, that is the riddle. What is the difference in your screenshots, other than clarity?

The needle movements and the AP light.
Turns out that the icons are the Simicons1024 items, and they just don't work in the VC - although that's a known issue.

The only cure for the non-functioning knob for the heading bug seems to be a replacement of the gauge.
