Yesterday evening, I said good bye to Ruffie, a Bolivian Ram that has been living in my fish tank for 5 plus years. Ruffie had an exceptionally long life.....his species has an average life span of about 3.5 years...which is about how long my other two Bolivian Rams, Spike and Mickey, lived. He was a fairly mature fish when I bought him, so he was around 5.5 to 6 years old.
Ruffie was a superbly beautiful example of his species with incredible coloring and fin development. But over the last 3 months, I watched as Ruffie lost his vibrant colors and his flowing fins began to tear and fray. He took on the look of old age...he looked a lot like Walter Matthau in Grumpy Old Men....he just looked OLD!
He went peacefully while Deb and I were gone. We came home to find him lifeless, sucked up against one of the intake strainers on one of the large filters on the 55 gallon tank he lived in. I had planned to bury him in the flower garden, but with 10 inches of snow and butt cold temps....I opted to give him a ride in the Porcelain Limo instead.
I will dig out my photo archive CDs and DVDs and find some pics of Ruffie when he was a young, handsome fish and upload a couple of them.
