How come on so many converted aircraft the rudder quites moving as soon as the wheels leave the ground. They also quit working at that point too.Blondi:cost1:

Well I see i asked the proverbial dumb question.Seems after all these years i suddenly noticed that some of the aircraft rudders did not work in the air.I first noticed this on some of the converted aircraft but not all. Some did work in the air. This morning I went back and took a look.It seems that all the stock cfs2 aircraft have rudders that don't work in the air.:redf: OK dumb question.Have a good one.BLONDI:cost1:

Are you sure "Auto Rudder" is turned off?

Well, its not a dumb question at all. Its actually a good question with an extremely complicated answer. Its related to the way designers model (or fail to model) the visual effect of wheels-up airspeed on the rudder. I myself am guilty of overlooking this one in my own conversions. Unless you have an advanced understanding of AirEd, flight dynamics and air file modding, its not worth looking into. It starts with record 519 - Rudder Control Factor vs IAS and then connects to records 1536 and 1537, all of which are only editable in hex format inside of AirEd (yeah that's right, try that for grins).

Now, you could go for modding this insignificant annoyance via Airwrench (not an easy fix), but you risk screwing up the overall flight envelope and rendering your birds damn near un-flyable. The best approach is to use the 1% workbook to edit these air file records, but again you'll need quite a bit of know-how to get it right without messing up the envelopes.

The upside is that if you can bypass and overlook the lack of visual rudder movement at wheels-up airspeed, you can still do a lot within AirEd to enhance actual rudder effect performance-wise in terms of yaw, sideslip, propwash effect on rudder and rudder effect on roll. One of my favorite tactics in head-on engagements is to fake a head-on, kick hard rudder and yaw away from my approaching target to throw off its aim, then kick reverse rudder back on it at the last seconds as it passes in the merge and rake it with a good burst - a tactic mastered by some WWII aces. Because rudder control is so grossly overlooked in CFS design, you can't even do this much with most airfiles out of the box, let alone see the rudder move. Thats where my tinkering comes into play. But despite my best efforts, i often have to live with no visual movement even with the enhanced rudder control.

Bearcat, I knew that if anyone knew the answer to this you would. I can see the fix for this is way out of my leage. I'm just happy that I finally learned how to convert aircraft to cfs2 fairly consistantly. Thank you for your answer, and you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year.BLONDI:santahat:
